bing! balance shaft belt snapped and took out the crank angle sensor! thats probably a good thing though, saved any more damage.

its really is a bit odd, i have seen similar codes thrown from weak battery during starting, failed coil packs, dirty/disconnected connections. the crank/cam sensors are epoxy filled magnetic pick-up sensors, very stable and highly unlikely to fail (hence why they are used). They will fuck up...

its a two part system in the RVR, you have the Cam Angle Sensor as pictured and the Crank Angle Sensor down by the crankshaft sprocket. are you sure its the Cam Sensor thats gone and not the Crank? they are a fairly reliable sensor, much more than the earlier VR4 style. if you've had a oil...
