automatic gearbox rvr

Hi guys, I have a '97 HSG with an auto. I'm thinking about putting a tdo5 turbo on it one day and using an aftermarket walbro. My question is, how strong are these autos? Is there a reason that mitsubishi put a smaller turbo on the autos other than for spooling earlier in the rev range? or...
