i've decided i want to change jobs and ive been thinking about doing some mining in WA.. does anyone work over there or know someone i can contact about it?

thanks

i have a friend from work who is currently on a call list for a job there, dunno if he got it or not, but its hell of a good cash flow! most places pay for a place to live for the first year or so and for most food......

I thought about mining.. but that wait list is terrible.. a friend left where we work for a job in qld.. that didnt work out and headed over to WA as his wife was offered a teaching job in a mining town.

However i am unsure if he found a job.. and that was over 6months ago..

Most mining jobs offer you a residence to stay there all paid for including your wage. BUT its a shortage of housing from what i understand that is the issue.

but, good luck..

1/ what qualifications

2/ dont even bother with any other questions until you have answered the above. yes there is big demand for workers here in WA mines, but it is a skilled/experienced labour shortage

MYTH NUMBER 1: I can rock up to a mine site and instantly get myself a six figure pay-check doing almost anything on that site...

MYTH NUMBER 2: People with good contacts can get you in to the mining game. Dont get me wrong it almost comes down to who you know, but you have to be a site yourself before any of this can come in to play.

Your best bet is to go off and get yourself in to some mining training - it is from here that tyou will pick up all good contacts, potential jobs etc. next be speaking with sub-contractor whom are in the mining games. if you dont really have any qualifications, sign up with a general labour mining recruitment agency (the pay will be great, but there is no stability of work this way)

there are also sooooo many more factors that just a pay check that one should consider before deciding to go to the mines...

My sisters hubby is high up Works Supervisor in the gold mines in Kalgoorlie. He mainly works out of there but sometimes he likes to spice things up by coming to the Hunter (north of Newcastle) at Muswellbrook and oversee projects for a few weeks/months then head back to WA. He's grabbed my brother and mates before as labourers for the duration of some projects and then heads back to Kalgoorlie. He invited my brother to go with him but well, you can lead a horse to water but you cant make them drink they say  Would have been good for him. The company flies him home every now and then for free to see my sister and kids and sometimes he comes back with a couple guys for a break then heads back. Its time he spends away from the mrs and kids as they chose to live near the family so the kids have cousins, uncles, aunts, granparents to grow up with rather than nobody in K. The $$ looks is good but you basically eat, sleep and drink mining and spend your $$ at the local pub and brothels in between home visits

I work as an exploration RC Driller in WA. I'm back in Melbourne on break this week if you want to give me a call, i'll be free and hopefully let help you out with what to do and where to start.

Pm me if you need my number.

There's a heck of a lot more about mining than the paycheck. You need to balance all the downsides of it against the cash you're earning. I can point out at some mines that are about to recruit 200+ unskilled, but you can dream about earning 6 figure salaries if you're not some form of engineer, project manager, tertiary qualified higherup. The average jumbo operator etc earns 60-80, drivers earn 65-85 and so forth. We're introduced to a lot of companies and a lot of mine managers through the mining engineering degree, best bet would be to look into it thoroughly and decide if the lifestyle is going to suit you. And remember, all mines pay highly, not just the remote ones in WA. There is something like 108 mines on the east coast of Australia too, although a lot of them are Coal (which isn't a huge amount of fun but you get to play with more machines than Iron ore/Nickel/Zinc/etc).

Key point: Remember you work 10on 4off 12 hour shifts on the mines unskilled (that's a general roster for most minesites... all BHP/Rio mines do that). Most of your shift will be underground so you've gotta be good with confined spaces and your body has to react well to a complete lack of sunlight which can SERIOUSLY affect your mental health.

Also it's a boys club, and if the guys who work unskilled find out you have a brain or are studying anything they will hang shit on you forever and segregate you. AND, every miner I know swears every second word. So as long as your mates are good with you starting to do that...

you want a six figure pay packet .. well its not all its cracked upto be.

firstly you get taxed like a bitch,
if you have a HECS debt you get taxed like a bitch even more,

if you have a family and your combined income reaches 110k you are no longer eligable for the 50% child care rebate.

you will instantly become part of the labour parties hit list, now they know you have money they will want to take it and give it to the poor and lazy.

with a family and a mortgage 110k pa doesnt get you far when you take out all the tax and bills.

if your a young bloke with a fast car -- go for it.. you and your car will be loving it.

Tell me about it mate! It's almost not worth trying to earn big $$$ now. The more you earn the harder the Tax Man butt-rapes you.
