ok so my 4g63 died and needs a rebuild, i have about 3-3.5 to spend on internals so i was just wondering where would it best be spent. i am hoping for low 1/4 mile times and my best to date is a 11.7 on stock internals and 15psi,

mods so far:

GT35R
700cc injectors
Bosch 040 pump and surge tank
huge custom plenum
huge 4 row radiator with twin thermos
billet catch can
bigger TB to suit plenum
full exhaust 3 inch
big FMIC
Haltech stand alone
HKS cam gears, never been dialed in
NOS kit not installed yet
and im sure theres a few things i left out

i found a 2.4L stroker kit for $2800 and was considering it

all i really need is pistons, rings, main bearings, my head was stuffed so i need a 2nd hand one and prob get some port work and cams

any help would be great as im only new to the 4G63's

cheers

You can't port 1g heads that much, but a decent clean up off the CC's should be sufficient- i'd look at getting a piston and rod combo, along with some 272 cams and cam gears.

There are tons on ebay.com

Eagle and JE seem to popular

Yeah I'm running Eagles and JE's in my engine too. When you look at people like Shep (doing 7.701 on 55psi+ on JE pistons) and Buschur (doing flat 8.0 on fuk knows psi with JE pistons and Eagle rods) you can see why they are a popular combination. JE have over 60 years experience in racing so say no more, and Eagle rods are proven time and time again in 800-900hp packages so why wouldnt people buy them as they are excellent value for money. A great combo for the 4G63 in my bias opinion

Are you gonna rebuild the engine yourself? because there's a lot more stuff I can list that you need to get done and buy in a rebuild and that $3-3.5 will go in a real hurry

Just for a bit of information, here is a receipt for some recent engine work my housemate off the forum (josh_tsv) had done.

This Obviously doesnt include the purchasing of the piston/rod combo, gaskets,Loctites/Adhesives and all the other bits and pieces one may need for an engine rebuild.

We have fitted the head and all the ancillaries bar the Timing belt/balancer pully side.

Note that most of the cost is labour  Which is where most of your funds actually go to :(

Hope this helps...

Yeah its the labour that kills it for everybody because people dont realise how long it can take from start to finish to build an engine and they pay at least $40 minimum an hour for a mechanic. Fair enough too because those guys have businesses to run, leases and employees to pay etc and you would also get charged a bit more on parts as well.

If you shopped around for parts to make some savings, then sent your engine components away to get machined, bored, honed, decked, shaved, balanced, pressure tested and what not and then either assemble it yourself or get get someone who knows what they are doing to assemble it for you on the cheap, then you can save quite a fair bit. Youd have to trust the person putting it all together obviously and no, I dont suggest that people do it themselves unless they are experienced or have someone experienced with them by their side.

ah Rob, can you build me a short block :p :D hint hint
You suckhole. PM sent

just so everyone knows the 3k is just for parts, i got quoted $1500 for labour including acid dip and other basics.

i will respond to the other posts 2moro, thanks for everyones inputs so far.

cheers
Adrian

P.S. does anyone have a head they wanna sell me...?? no cams or gears needed and even if it need a rebuild as i want to port it and do the springs.

go for

pistons
rods
acl race bearings
arp head studs
cams
valve springs + retainers
+ all the machining on parts..
+ head (already about 1k)

that should use up 3k pretty easily

that should make a nice and sturdy 4g63

yeah i saw the JE and eagle piston rod combo for sale but these 7 sec cars you talk about i doubt they are using the same off the shelf pistons as are for sale to me ;) but it does seem to be the best bang for my buck

the 3k is for parts alone as i have already set aside 2k for the rebuild and getting the motor in and out. please keep listing thing...:)

I think barry listed it pretty well there- might wanna add a decent headgasket in the mix too.

Just found out that I destroyed all of my JE forged pistons in my motor. Running lean & detonation as a result of a faulty fuel injector doesn't help; thank you very much. You don't need 500kw's or have to run 7 second quarters to do that...

 it pays to have a well built and tuned engine!!

Dont forget things such as ARP main bolts, ARP rod bolts (come for free with Eagle rods), balance shaft eliminator kit, new timing belt kit, new water pump, complete engine gasket kit including seals, there's more when you delve into a full rebuild otherwise you'll end up with one of the 'old' unchanged parts causing you grief. Do it once, do it right. You should also do the hydraulic tensioner and harmonic balancer too but if they test OK then they can be used for years instead of getting a new one everytime you do a build.

i dont know if this applies to the 4g eagle rods
but a mate of mine just got some from the states for his
e30 bmw and the arp bolts were knock off copies and
the rods were a bees dick too thick(7 thou) too.

it may not matter but this was for a race car and sizes were very important.

he has now bought arrow rods and they are mad quality and
sent the eagles back.

again this may have been a one off or a dodgy seller but either way
be aware.

where did he buy them from??

some bm workshop in the us.
along with heaps of other
bits, he did not get them off ebay etc...

but maybe

the guys he bought them from did

They didnt buy from CRANKSHAFT DEPOT on Ebay did they? I've read that that company buys shit from China and yes, there are now Chinese made copies of Eagles and Tomei's getting around as well. They look almost like the real thing too until closer inspection and weighing them.

but as you can see from their EBay auction they look to be exact copies of Eagles.

These are blanks made in China. And now I am worried that the Chinese companies may be starting to print the name brands on these fakes just the same as they have cloned the Walbros and Garret turbos etc plagueing our aftermarket industry  They dont have any copyright laws over there to stop them from doing it either

As you can see from the links to pics below, this guy in the US bought Eagles from this seller on American EBay to suit his Nissan. To cut a long story short, what he got delivered to him was a box from China with the brand CAT on it. Now Eagles are supposed to be made in the USA! When he opened it up he found a rod with the word TOMEI printed on it - TOMEI's are supposed to be a Japanese company!!! Now dont get me wrong, but that rings alarm bells to me! Looking at the ARP bolts in one of these pics, they may look like the real deal to someone who hasnt seen them up close before, but the quality of the finish of the bolt and wording on them looks a lot grainier and poorer quality to me. The guy didnt even get any Eagle stickers inside, nor get ARP lube or instructions. This fake shit coming from China just keeps pissing me off more and more. If you ever go to buy any product from a company on EBay, make sure they have been established for a while and operate from a physical premises or workshop with a well known background - these people should have established suppliers and should tell the difference between fake and the real deal if they come across it.

Sadly, its just the way things are these days and it wont be long before people will start to complain about their 'brand name' items stuffing up on them.

no not from ebay as i said rob, they came direct from the workshop but,

the ones he got did not even have "arp 2000" just "arp"
which rang alarm bells for me.
and no lube

then we measured them and found they are too think.

they are going back for a refund

Oh yeah send it back for sure George. Eagles rods come in an Eagles box, have an Eagles blue and white sticker inside, a product information and tech sheet to fill in, ARP 2000 bolts and ARP lube :)

On the other hand, if indeed China are manufacturing rods for Eagles and Tomei and whoever else, then sell the crappy blanks off as a 'no name brand', chances are they wouldnt have undergone the same quality control measures as the finished cleaned, balanced, magnafluxed and tested product bought from companies like Eagles, Tomei etc. These companies have quality controls in place and would finish them off and test them before selling them under their own name. There's no doubt that Eagles & Tomei are the goods with proof to back it up, but it appears from the links above that side deals are happening with blanks being stamped and then sold direct from China  This sh!t sux big time and we all should be worried about it.
