Hey guys finally received my 4 point harness today and just wondering how people have there's mounted without a cage
I was thinking bout mounting the top straps to wear the rear seat belts mount but unsure of the lap straps. I haven't had much to with the safety side of Motorsport so thought I'd ask you guys

Cheers

Have a look at the extract from the CAMS manual I have attached.

Depending on how serious you want to be, you can install eye blots and plates in the exact right spots as per the manual. Or you can use your existing lap sash mounting points for the lap belts and the kiddy restraint point on the parcel self for the shoulder straps (if you got them).

Just remember, at race speeds without a cage, your harness is just going to keep you still while the rest of the car crushes you to death. :)

Or if the mounting points are deformed in the impact, the harness will go slack and you will still move and probably strike something in the vehicle which will kill you.

IMO harnesses used in street cars are a waste of time and pure wank-factor. Without a cage, proper mounting points and a fixed racing seat, you might as well stick with the factory validated and proven seatbelt.

It's not for wank factor it's so I don't get kicked out the drags for running an 11sec pass I have to trailer it 5 hours to get to the strip and I don't want to get booted after one run. The car will get a cage but how the car runs will determine if I go for a 4point or 6point cage

Where are you running it?
At Willowbank you have to run faster than 10.5 unless you have an airbag std, then it drops to 9.99 before you have to think about cages and harnesses.

Will be in Mackay and they been pretty strict with the rules I'm just covering my ass its a long drive to race. I miss our local strip :(

Willowbanks rules seem to differ to the andra rules. Andra states a build date from 1/1/08 as a modern car and can run to 10.0 sec where willowbank rules state a street car can run to 10.5 sec and a modern street car originally fitted with 4 wheel discs and air bag can run to 10.0 sec.
Will just cover my ass and follow the andra rule for below 12.0 the need to run a 4 point harness even though it states you need a 5 point harness when running over 130mph will see how I go and how strict they are on the rules

George...just for your info...for some reason the Evos dont have the kiddy restraint on the rear parcel shelf. I know mine doesnt for some fucked reason. Whereas my old GSR did? Makes no sense.

Hmm... I can see reasons why an EVO wouldn't have a kiddy restraint, I would assume that the target market was not considered to be people with young children; mind you if the EVO was based on the Lancer body shell wouldn't it have the kiddy restraint by default ? I think I've just negated my own argument...

Considering my previous GSR had it...I cant understand why my Evo doesnt....got me fucked.
Just another reason to not let the wife or kids in it! My seats, carpet and floor mats are still looking brand new!!

I ended up just mounting to the rear seat belt points. But you got me thinking I wonder if I have the child restraint mounts being a rs it might

No early EVOs had the child restraint, I don't even think Jap GSRs had them, Robs EVO3 GSR didn't have it, he was going to get 1 welded in for his child seats

GSRs deff did have them though

Yeah my EVO 3 didn't have any child restraint threaded nuts in the parcel shelf.
To put one in I had to go and get it done by an RTA Engineering Signatory, or at least someone the signatory approved of to do the welding, then take it to the signatory to sign off.
I didn't end up getting it done. Sold the Evo.

Isnt that pretty much what I said above ^
Better to have a few people to confirm it, i'll check the Japspec GSR tomorrow to see if that even has 1 lol

It's a funny law on imports. They had to be fitted to the Cosworth I bought into WA. But it was blue slipped fine in NSW without them. And as EVO-00X says, it's a costly bullshit exercise.

Just don't bolt the shoulder straps to the floor behind the drivers seat like the 'old days', the CAMS people have seizures. What's the lateral angle like mounted to the rear belt points? Really should be within the spec recommended in the article. Thing is, you may actually have to rely on the harness to save your life one day, and trust me, safety stuff is one thing not to cut corners on. I would be dead already.

Yeh just from eying it off it looks good but will check with a line of chords when I get around to finishing it. Not really high on my priorities ATM as last weeks test and tune got post poned to this week cause of rain and this week has been rained out as well. I head back to work next week so will be months before I get a chance to run.

Aus-spec GSRs would have a child restraint because they're required by law for any vehicle sold in our market.

As EVOs and J-spec GSRs were not sold in our market - no reason for them to have a child restraint. Easy.

You could look at fitting a harness bar for your harness shoulder straps.

Theres bars you can buy but not sure how strong it would be

Or as Shayne mentioned, you can buy (or make) a harness bar like this
