Hey guys!

Putting a 4g/awd conversion into an FTO and would like to know all my options in regards to compatibility etc.

Basically, from my current research i know the following will fit but am unaware at all the differences throughout the evo range that might impact how many parts will be compatible etc.

Evo 5 hubs and brembos will bolt straight up to the FTO subframe cradle/control arms - the FTOAU club president has this conversion already and put up a detailed DIY on it - is the evo 5 brembos specific? or say would an evo 6 kit have identical mounting/bushes etc so i can look for either or?

I need an evo 4 or later engine. I have heard many things and have done plenty of research into the evo 4 engine wondering if i should look for 5 or later due to the dreaded crank walk, but through research have concluded that if built right and mainained properly, this shouldnt be an issue, even with the race application. (in any case, i plan to stroke to 2.3L with an AMS kit down the road anyway) In regards to mating this to a box, how well do the 4-9 boxes/engines go together? I have read that that the clutch and flywheel diameter on the 7-9 is slightly larger than earlier models, and was wondering if this would affect a direct bolt up, or would have to jam an earlier clutch in flywheel in the 7-9 casing if i went down that road? Im thinking the easiest way is to just hold out till i find a 4 engine and box, and mate them to a evo 5 hub (which brings me to my next question) - how will driveshafts play out? Straight fit from 4-5? or will some custom ones needed to be fabbed up? Evo 5 hubs are locked in pretty much so ill have to work around that.

In regards to rear running gear, i have heard an evo 4 rear diff will stitch straight in, and further cements the idea of a complete evo 4 setup (but then this entire thread is asking what is also compatible lol) Are any prop shafts/driveshafts interchangeable?

Finally, i have nfi which rear hubs i intend to use. Im thinking if the evo 5 fronts bolt straight up will the rears be as awesome to put in or will converting FWD to AWD rear hubs/gear be a frustrating problem ill want to throw a hissy fit over?

I am very mechanically minded, and have worked on numerous cars doing everything from clutched to head gaskets and know my way around them fairly well, however when it comes to doing conversion etc im not the sharpest tool in the shed - so please excuse any noobness i may have portrayed here! Apart from the custom fab work i also intend to do most of the work myself to save a few bucks to get this happening sooner. The more that bolts up the better, although at this point im only expecting the donor FTO parts and evo 5 hubs to do this.

I should probably also state what im using out of the FTO here as well in case any one sees a problem and can point it out before i go ahead and waste time and money.
The Subframe cradle, steering rack and column. Dash/cluster. A frankenstein Loom thats half FTO half EVO (will not be touching it myself, but idc whatever the easiest is) - or will simply going a complete aftermarket standalone save a LOT of time and money on this, and would save thousands in the long run?
Strut braces/wiper motor etc etc i will use off the FTO, but this will be completely spartan - so race battery and fuel cell in the boot, completely stripped interior with plexi etc so not many parts are needed.

Sorry for the Essay, i tried condensing it as much as possible so people dont have to write an essay back to answer all the questions if they want to lol
I also understand that i have to donate 5 bucks every 15 days to be eligible to buy/sell stuff here is this correct? I dont want to ask if anyone has any of this gear here for sale if i have to do it properly in other areas of the site!

Cheers in advance for any help anyone will offer. Although i have been on 4 other evo/4g forums so far and not a single word has been said in any threads (or even my welcome thread to be honest) so hopefully this is a more friendlier bunch :D

Well welcome here then. sounds like a cool conversion that will keep you occupied for a while. lol.

I know sfa regards the later backwards engines so im not much help there at all.

are you building this for the road? I don't think so as you say plexiglass. what style racing are you planning to do?

Hey guys,
I do apologize jack of all, this is purely intended as a pure track car - circuit but mostly time attack related series.
That link posted is of Richard Batty in the UK. Its a drag setup and is still FWD.
There is a bloke in sydney who has done a 4g awd conversion but will not utter a word and is keeping it all hush hush =/
I know the 4g can be done in the FTO and relatively easy, however the only evidence of an AWD setup is a incomplete 4g AWD roadster that was undertaken (in the UK in think?) and never finished - and this other guy in sydney with the only evidence is a few people on facebook 'confirming' it.
The benefit of being a pure track car is that while i still have to comply with CAMS reg's, i dont have to comply with regular QLD DMV laws, which means i can do a LOT more than i otherwise could. I can widen the tunnel/scrap the fuel tank and replace with a boot fuel cell, and can stitch in a rear diff which would be otherwise illegal.
Im actually surprised of the amount of responses so quickly! Like i said ive posted on many different forums that are either dead or ignorant or both =P Good to finally get a nice friendly bunch!

For those of you who are interested, ive started a build thread on facebook for my mates - its an open page and is welcome to all to keep an eye on progress :)

Finally found a awd evo fto build thread. And it looks like you need to be a very good welder. Read thru to page 3

there is one here in melbourne, tarmac rally car, has full evo running gear from a 5 or 6 from memory.
quite a bit of welding to be done in the back but nothing too silly.

Hey Justgsr - that was the AWD EVO roadster i was talking about. The only problem with that build is that they simply weld an evo floor in and go from there. I do not intend to do this (and if this sydney guy has any merit and has done an AWD conversion i wont need to)
I can play around and stitch the rear diff in, widen the tunnel etc but i shouldnt need to go that far. Im not sure that will be allowed with CAMS reg's (and certainly not for and road laws (not that it matters anyway))
Dougmo, Yay! more evidence it can be done. Do you know if it has had a floor swap? I suspect a fair amount of welding etc is required but i know a few people that have businesses that hopefully will do it fairly cheap (maybe even free if sponsored?)
Atm im more focused on finding out what is compatible with what so i can start sourcing parts and figure out how its all going together :)

from memory the boot floor was swapped and the extra mouting points were added in, nothing crazy but still a bit of work all the same

So helpful guys! Refreshing for a change :)
Hey Bryce. Thanks for the link, had a good read through - unfortunately it doesnt tell me much i dont already know. The guy is on facebook in the fto page, but comes across as an extremely private person, and pretty much flat out refuses to say anything about the whole car :( Ive accepted i wont get any useful information from him.
What im after more than anything is what can be pieced together with what. Once i know what i can look for then i can then purchase everything, then physically take it down to my fab guy and work out all the wrinkles from there. Im sure i wont be doing it EXACTLY the same, there wil be a few subtle differences as i dont have to adhere to such a strict road rules guideline. :)

your on the right track to confirm a few things
do the rear ce (E4,5,6) floor pan and upper control arm sockets into the chassis rails (for the rear end body work)
Rear Running Gear: in the rear dont bother with the ayc diff, just use a evo1,2,3, rear diff and throw a LSD in it just like a evo 1,2,3,4,5,6 RS (Centre ) ;)

And happy days You will need to have the oem drive shaft shortened but that will be done almost last anyways.

As long as You can either source a whole Evo 4,5,6, (preferable RS = Easyier and less parts ) you'll be home and hosed.

GL with it.

here is a picture of the one Dougmo is taking about

Im going to convert my Cordia so I was interested also

this one is a twin turbo Leggy motor I believe

Hey liberoz,
Ive just sourced pretty much an entire evo 4 collection, including rear hubs, driveshafts and AYC diff
Im thinking because i have evo 4 everything it will be better spending a little more time and effort stitching the diff in etc than sourcing a million different parts and making them all try and fit?
Hey sivart
looking good! Dont suppose you have any more info on it at all? ;)

Cheers guys! just got to cough up the 2200 for all this gear and i can start getting it all in!

if your seriously thinking about a shop to do a floor swap classic n chrome on the gold coast mate i just did the awd conversion on my cc coupe and that who did it once you do the floor swap and get all the mount points your laughing. they had it all welded in inside of a week.

Gibbs trucks Labrador shortened the shaft. all i essentially did was take all my parts in and said make it fit. very happy with their work all up incl engineering tail shaft shortening install etc cost me 3700 they took care of everything

Hi Khubner
cheers for the tip - although im going to try and not do a floor swap - imo i dont think its necessary and can be worked around, however saying that its probably easier doing the swap (if, that is i can find a good condition floor from an evo 4 and get it delivered here cheap.
If i dont need to swap floors then i can use my mate who owns a fab shop, which would ultimately be next to nothing or free if he wants some ad space haha.
Will definitely take that into consideration though, if it turns out thats the route i have to go then id only pay for the floor swap as the rest would bolt up essentially, and that i can do myself :D
Cheers

check out just jap imports they're in brisbane and seen them get both front and rear cuts in.

as far as getting the mounting points into your fto you best option is the floor swap otherwise your going to need to fab up custom diff brackets etc and still have to cut away parts of your floor.

this is a drag project right?
