Loads of them to choose from. From $55 each (ebay) to $400+ for the big brand name ones.

RPM will be 7000rpm or less and weight is not a huge stress. Just dont want valves and pistons playing bump in the night.

Anyone got a few tips for me?

Thanks 4g:thumbsup:

I'm using HKS and X3E cam gears.

HKS are always believed to be bad but I haven't seen them fail personally.
negatives - 3 bolts instead of 4/5 like others and anodising is weak.

Fidanza - I've been told of some failures where they break.
X3e - First set I am using but they look ok. They have 5 bolts holding them and are quite sturdy.

I went through the same, and for reasonably priced set fidanza is what i chose. i paid 300 aussie deliverd. That is as cheap a set as i personally would go. They are pretty proven Or go some sexy big $ jap ones i guess.

Tha basic design i looked for was 5 or 6 adjustment bolts, spreads the load more so less chance of it slipping. If they do its a good chance you can kiss you valves and pistons bye bye so dont skimp. And also not too thin on the spokes near the center, seems wherer a few brands broke. like the early aem design. Apparently they fixed it with new designs.

Do some reading on dsmtuners and dsmtalk forums, good chance if it can break the yanks will do it. Take it all with a grain of salt though. Sift through the bullshit and idiot installations.

The real cheap ones i wouldnt touch likr obx ect on ebay, the coating comes off. heaps of sheap shit on ebay. Some have the annodising on teeth wear away also. or adjustin bolts snap. Likely due to over tourquing them however. Also read the tourque spech its stuff all. My instructions were in foot inches not foot pounds easy to stuff it up.

The aussie to american dollar is great so id look to buy from there.

Im not a pro engine builder just thats what i concluded after hours and hours of forum whoring.

Skunk2 FTW.

One of the guys organised a group buy quite a while ago and a few of us got very competitive prices on them as a result.

i think it was where the hole was positioned for the centering pin, and the markings on the sides....

whats the point when you can set advancement on ignition timing? the tune would (probably) cost less and provide better results.

The pin to line them up is 90 degrees differnt. Some come with pins for both. 1g and 2g.

i believe it was: advance and retarding timing would just move power band around from different points, advancing and retarding cam gears would allow you to stretch the power band....

VR4 and evo 1-3 are the same.

Later model evo's are different.

In saying that, I'm using the late model evo gears on the AMG galant (early model motor).

The markings are off. As jay said, the centre dowels are not exactly the same. I dialed the cams in anyway, so it wasn't an issue. It just looks a little off because the markings are for the later model.

Some cam gears have 2 dowel holes which allowed you to use it for either generation motor.

I have heard stories of HKS and only recently Fidanza stripping teeth. I picked up my Fidanza cam gears roughly 18 months ago and cost me $200 due to the Aussie $$ being around $0.95 US at the time. Perfect timing (pun intended)!!

I have only knocked up 3,000kms with them so far and they have scratched the shit out of my clear cam cover...

scratched?
How? is it rubbing?

This photo was only when it was first rebuilt. There is slight wear from the one cam although now it's more prevalent. I have read in other forums of other people having similar issues.
