Hi all, just wanting some advice about regarding a possible coversion

Body; 1998 lancer wagon glxi with power everything, std gear atm, 233k, ex sales rep car i.e. interior looks like a rabid chihuahua has held a crack fueled rave with some mates.
Engine in stock; Genuine evo 3, cp pistons, eagle rods, all else is std (engine is evo 3, plumbing etc. from RVR hypergear, 450cc inj, td04hl turbo 13t? etc.)
Gearbox; none as yet (advice)
ECU; evo 1 eprom std tune (510cc inj)

I have read the tech posts, but am weighing up if it is worth doing at all. I am mechanically handy and have no probs with anything regards the conversion, have mates who can do the mod plate etc.
Would the std g'box hold up with std rvr tuning i.e. under 160kw I don't mind lower power but love quick spooling and torque and i'm figuring with forged internals it will be pretty bullet proof in std trim.
I need to source some other parts but am not too concerned atm, just wanting some honest advice from people who have either done the conversion or have a daily driver in similar trim as to what i should expect performance wise and handling, handling being a big one in my books. Power to ground is important, as well as when the turbo spools and how linear the power curve is. Geez i'm picky, but we've all been in a mate of a mate's car thar has a billion kw that comes on at 7800rpm, i don't find that to be usefull at all.

Regarding why i have RVR bits, the young man who owned the engine previously had crankwalk issues and put in an RVR hypergear engine and used all his bolt ons leaving the RVR stuff behind. The engine was fixed and rebuilt without issue so is spankin' new ready to tango.

Regards, Ben.

Front wheel drive is always going to be a handfull with any substantial power.
you can get them to handle quite well as long as you do it properly the first time - no point wasting money

a lot of people do it.
wiring wont be too crazy and when finished they are a lot of fun.

re the gearbox??? not to sure you could lock out a 4wd box to FWD and then that should hold up with moderate power 350-400hp providing the loads are set up correctly.
that would be extra cost though.

not sure if the stock 1.8ltr motor is same as 1.8/2.0 ltr 4g63/4g93
someone else my be able to help you there.

I would imagine if you used your clutch and not slammed into gears, and no hard launches it would probably hold up. .... for a while..

Chuck it in and use it. Gearbox will be ok for a while, and will save you having to source a Gsr k frame and n/s rollstop brace, and a gearbox.
The same box is in much heavier 2.6 magna. So will be ok.
Just take it easy on the clutch and launches

Thanks heaps for the replies guys, great info on the boxs jack of all, good to know.

So i suppose the next thing to do is bolt up a good, but not too heavy pressure plate, I have had unsprung 4 puck brass button clutch in a ser 1 rx7 ( Mchuge J port, 51 ida webber, cig locker 13.1 1/4 mile 2.2 60 ft=lame), as a daily driver which was fine, in fact when it was stipped down it still looked like new after 5 months, so it is safe to assume that i won't shred one if it is in the lancer.
I will have to fabricate an A/C bracket, or get one from a evo 3(or i could search for some rocking horse poo), same applies to the engine mount. There is a gsr galant with a 4g63 atmo in my local wreckers, but as i understand will make the engine sit too high, if in fact it will even fit period.
I will probably save myself the headache and give meek a call for the mount.

Will it run with the 450cc injectors(black top, green twin looking nozzle type)? I realise it will not be the same performance but am hoping it will suffice for run in. The turbo is an interesting thing, TDO4HL 49189-02500, some say good, some say crap, i beleive it will be good to about 5000rpm then run out of puff which will be fine for a while until i get overtaken by a commodore, then i will need something that will make the forged internals work for their supper.

Brake upgrade- M21 coupe, no brainer, although i think i might have some calls to make to some engineers to get some discs on the back to fit, once again only if it is possible/worth doing. I could get around it by not using the brakes, but alas my joy comes from corners more than straight line speed.

I have a metal head gasket that has been used, but i think i will bin it and grab a new one, but should it be Cometic or OEM? Is it just a prefference or are there real differences?

Once again i feel i am asking too much and contributing too little, but rest assured all will be photograghed inlcuding my head work/port cleanup, custom subtle paint (I am on my way to 40 and have done my time as pig bait lol)l) and all other bits and bobs.

Regards, Ben.

Air con bracket, maybe 1 from a Hyundai sonata will suit 93-99?

Gsr galant? Dunno about the mount, but it will be a horseshoe 6bolt type. If you want this style, then I have heard the Hyundai lantra one will suit. Or ring meek for the evo one. I have a Modded vr4 horseshoe style.

Injectors need to suit the tune. If you want to use your smaller ones you need to check your afr with a wideband. If lean, you will then need to get the 510s or retune.

I wouldn't bother doing anything. Just buy a EVO converted GSR if this is what you want or a dodgy rebuilt EVO. You are pissing money down the drain by doing this conversion and it isn't something someone else would want.

I'd be inclined to agree with this. I did an Evo 5 conversion on a ce mirage. Car was totally rediculous to drive had no traction and would have done faster laps with a 4g92 mivec which I had originally planned on doing. Cost a shitolad to do IMO was a total waste of time and money and my cc gsr with forged vr4 is much nicer to drive. If u want a wagon sell what you have and get a gt Libero imported they go nice and have all the bits you want including 4wd. Then 4g63 conversion is a lot easier if youd prefer the extra torque from the 2l

Hmmm, all things considered I might ditch it and try for something else, there is nothing worse than waaaaaay too much power and not enough traction in a fwd. Secondly, I have noticed a huge crack in the ex, side of the turbo around the waste gate flap.
Ah well, i think i will wait till I'm a registered nurse (hey don't laugh it's a licence to print money) and buy something all paws that will go like stink.

Regards, Ben
