reverse has no synchro, to begin with...as for second gear it will cost you labor... prob lookin 600 all up, or about 300 if you pull the box out..

wat do you mean reverse doesnt have a synchro josh? it says all gears are sunchrmeshed in one of Protons GTi brochures that it does??

so just to replace the 2nd gear synchro im looking at $300? if i take the box down to the workshop? um what about a changeover box?

Jason, reverse crunches usually due to the reverse idler gear dropping onto the input shaft and engaging direct. To slip directly into reverse nicely, you need to be at a complete stop. It also helps to give it a bit of a rev whilst lightly pushing into reverse til it falls in - just like a dogbox lol
If the problem with 2nd gear is more than just the synchro, like damaged teeth on hub and slider, just replacing the synchro on its own wont do shit to rectify the problem for too long. If you need a new hub and slider, it should also involve fitting new springs and keys and synchro at the same time. This is where it gets very expensive in parts and labor, over $1000 in fact depending on the damage. Financially you could weigh up whether you will be better off to drop the price of the car $1000 to sell it, or undergo the hassle and price of repairing or replacing the gearbox. In your case, I would probably just replace it with a good 2nd handy, especially if you can do the labour yourself. If you are going to keep the car for some time, then opening and repairing the damage is always the better way to go IMO as you never know what kind of condition a 2nd hand box will be in when you buy one, unless its been opened up and inspected.

If worst comes to worst ill have to drop the price but i dont want to do that if i can get this box fixed up especially if i can do the labour of swapping the boxes over

thanks for the input Rob your always a help mate B)
