Aftermarket ECUs for a '95 GSR

Hi guys
Well we went down to Allstar garage the other day to enquire about tuning, and basically they gave us this puzzled look, and said $3000 for a new computer. Not exactly the most customer service centred bunch I've ever met. So basically my question is, what kinds of aftermarket computers can be run on a GSR that can be tuned too? If I can pick one up cheap somewhere then that would be great, because $3000 for a new computer isn't feasible on a car that only cost $1000...

If you want some piggy back computer or a full remappable one with extras
like a 2 or 3 bar map sensor,launch control etc...

I have a Haltech e6x I'm looking at offloading if you want it. It's a straight plug in for a GSR and comes with map sensor and boost solenoid.

I've got 2 microtechs I'm selling with hand controller for dash and loom. I think I want $500 for 1 ecu and hand controller ect

I feel your pain Liam. I've been looking at all kinds of ECU's for the Evo 3 but still haven't decided on anything.
I looked at everything from Motec down to a reflashed Evo 5/6 ECU. A Haltech kit with direct plug-in loom seems the easiest but I'm not sure about them. They don't seem to be as smooth as the others. Vipec is the brand that All-Star suggested to me but yes they are 3k fitted and tuned.

Yeh, 1k +2k worth of repairs and bits, budget is about $500 roughly. I'll do some research on the different ECUs you guys have mentioned, thanks

A tune is roughly around $600 last time ive asked around

Yes, he probably recommends it because he is a dealer but that also means he is familiar with tuning them - which is what you want.
3k isn't cheap, but you have to remember that the ecu itself will be around the $1,000-$1,500 + mark if bought new. If you're not keen on paying that much, then keep an eye out for second hand and plug in options.

I'll be running a microtech lt-10s shortly. Picked it up on here second hand for $500, with loom to suit my engine and hand controller.
I've also run a lt-10s on my last car too, again, picked it up 2nd hand for around the $500 with loom.
They aren't the best ecu's around, but I've never had any major issues with them, and for that price I'm not going to complain!

EDIT: I see you posted whilst I was writing this, $500 budget is honestly not going to get you anything unless you can install and tune it yourself. Even then, your options are going to be fairly limited

Even if you get a plug n play Haltech E8 for around $800 2nd hand, you will need to install a MAP sensor (if it doesnt have the internal 2 bar), also the E8 will require a air temp sensor as they dont pick up the OEM AFM

I would also be looking at a wideband to go with it, but i will say minimum u will see is around $1800 for installed and tuned

^^ an excellent option, and probably the best value for money. but still not likely to get out of it for $500 unless a special / 2nd handy comes up.
You're probably realisticly looking at around $700 installing and tuning yourself, this will allow for for other requirements, such as a wideband and getting the chip installed.

You also don't HAVE to run an air temp sensor on most aftermarket ECU's, so you don't have to spend the extra unless you want to.... It is a good idea to run one though.

Wow.. Looks like I'll stick with the stock ECU and sub par fuel economy for now That kind of money isn't easy to come up with, and like I said, Don't want to be putting thousands of dollars worth of computer stuff into this car when it only cost me 1k to buy.. Maybe if we ever get round to a 4G63 swap then it'll get a tuneable computer

My tuner recommends top of line microtechs an motecs.

If you like your mechanic/tuner,go with whatever he likes using,end of the day he will be the one usings its parameters and tuning it.
