Hey all,

My engine is currently tuned on Mine's Race Tune ECU but still retains the stock Evo 1 GSR Header. I've been thinking about upgrading/replacing it with something aftermarket as it seems rusted to hell. I spotted this header on ebay, but was wondering what you thought:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TURB...005QQitemZ150253456851QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Is their any HP gain to be had with going with something like this? Any reccomendations on a header for a reasonable price? Would my money be better spent on different engine mods? If so, what?

Many thanks,
deviantek

If you wanted to get anything, then i'd get an aftermarket cast manifold. If you are upgrading your turbo to something larger, then perhaps you can look at a decent stainless manifold :)

I won't be changing out the turbo. How is the stock evo manifold? Is it even worth going for something aftermarket. Gains to be seen?

IMO there are other things you can spend your cash on before you need to replace your exhaust manifold. Can you give us a run down on your mods? Or a link to a members rides thread or something?? :)

I'm on a tight budget, but looking to streamline this car and get as much power out of it as possible. Note: It's primary use is going to be a rally stage runner.

That was kinda hard to read, so I simplified it. Let me know if I left anything out engine wise

When you say "rally stage runner" what exactly does that mean? Rally car? If so, then there might be rules and regulations as far as engine mods you can do so i'd look into that first. If not, then a new set of intercooler pipes and intercooler, intake pipe, possibly a set of cams, and also if you really want to get the most out of it, get an aftermarket ECU :)

Save your money and spend it on something else. If it's a 'rally' car, definitely stick with the stock cast manifold - they're far more resilient to cracking/fatigue/damage than an aftermarket steam pipe manifold is going to be, especially a cheapy chinese ebay special.

If it does crack at any stage, or you have it off the car, you can port the runners out for some small gains or replace it with an E3 manifold (again, ported) which are apparently slightly better. The gains are going to be negligible though.

That's the info I was looking for. Thank you. In that case I'll just do some clean up and replace rusted out bolts & powdercoat.

by all means do the clean up and replace the bolts but dont power coat it mate as it will melt straight off

if you can get it done look at ceramic coating

Those Extreme Heat paints don't work? What about heat-wrapiing it, maybe a better solution? If so, where's a good place to find heat-wrap material?

Thanks,

My (steam pipe) manifold is painted black with VHT paint and it's held up alright, though has discoloured around the collector. As Dougmo suggested, get it cereamic coated - you can get it done in a couple of different finishes, either a shiny silver kind or a matte black finish, both look good, will handle the temps no worries and will provide the benefit of keeping heat in the exhaust manifold.

I wouldn't heat wrap it if I were you. On the lancers, the vents above the bonnet will leak water straight onto the heat wrap, which is going to hold moisture against the manifold .. it'll be far more prone to rusting that way.

Have you considered just getting an ARC or similar manifold cover if you just want it to look neat?

What are these ARC covers you speak of? I've still got the stock heat cover, but it's rusted to hell as well and is extremely brittle. I've painted over it, but it's so rusted through I may as well toss it out. Any links would be greatly appreciated =)

Thanks,

This is an ARC cover on GSRSOL's car:

There's also JMF ones, which arent as good quality.

I can't seem to find the ARC heatshield in the link you provided, but that JM Fab one looks like it should do the job for $55. How much does the ARC generally go for? Do you have a direct link?

Many Thanks,

Also, there seems to be 4 different types of JM FABs. Normal, w/ lift cut out, w/ wastegate cutout, or "FP Cast Manifold." Which one is the right fit? :)
