This may sound like a stupid question, but is it possible to put the stock airbox over a pod filter? And if you could would there be any advantage over a panel filter? Also would there be any advantage in making the hole in the box bigger to allow more air to come in?

I've heard of people doing this by making up a box it if helps at all, and running a cold air induction feed from the surrounding box to the front bumper.
I think it might be a bit hard to fit a pod inside the stock airbox, although depending on which pod you use, one might fit inside.
I understand this is done to avoid problems with the cops, and also stop the pod from sucking in hot air from the engine.
Not sure how effective this actually is tho.
Would check if my apexi fits inside, but haven't got my car atm, being rebuilt.
Personally, i would think that having a pod inside a box would restrict the ammount of suction it could get.

i just bought a new apexi panel filter for about $75

i put this on my evo and it has a big flow and runs alot cooler too, stright away I noticed it even idles better

my mate at work gets them for me

That better idle could have just been the airbox not sealed properly (previous filter inserted incorrectly or back to front).
You'd be shocked how many mechanics i've seen do this......

At the moment iv'e got a pod, but its just sucking in hot air which can't be very good so probably going to go for a k&n panel. Would i get better performance by making the hole in the airbox bigger?

Wouldn't you just be sucking in the same air that the pod would?

I dont know, i assumed it would run cooler because of the filter being enclosed. I do understand your point though, ideally there would be an inlet at the front bumper connected to the airbox, but i cant be bothered mucking around like that.

If it's put there stock it surely cant be that bad???

Just for interests sake, ZOOM magazine did a test on all the air filters they could get their hands on and the best performance on a Pod filter was from the DRIFT Urethane filter that costs $39.95 from Autobarn. On the CB lancer with the 4G61 the K&N produced 133.9kw whilst the DRIFT produced 136.2kw. Saves you $70 and gives you an extra 2.3kw, not bad in anyones language..

Yes but is it actually doing any filtering... I am sure they would have gotten even more power with no filter at all. I guess thats why I have stuck with the stock filter, one idea would be to try the stock filter or something which a much higher power output(air consumption), say a LS1 filter, just one of the ideas I have had.

There was an article around that did a comparison of all pod style filters, and how they compare power wise, and also filtering.
I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to google it.

article is in an issue of high performance imports tech i have it some wear its all bugger all difference not worth worrying about on a streeter

On a slight side note here, and apologies if it seems a noob question, I have read in the manual of one of the cars I've owned that a car should not be run without an airfilter, as it says that the filter acts as a fire retardant in the case of a fire, would anyone agree with this ? And if so, would putting an air filter with too high a flow rate ie a cheap one off ebay for instance, possibly be the cause of the air filter not acting in such a fire retarding manner in the event of this type of fire ? Th reason I'm asking, is that this has happened to me and I'm still trying to figure out what caused it.

Cheers

hmm no idea

its funny how they mentioned not to run without an air filter.
i wouldnt even consider doing it regardless of fire hazard

ive changed air filters on all the cars ive owned , and they can get absolutely FILTHY... would anyone really want all that crap running through their turbo / motor

im happy with running a k&n in standard airbox..
