hey guys, my battery keeps on dying in the car. spoke to a few people and got a new alternator but both the things ive been hearing are two different things. one is that the battery has died and the other is the alternator is buggered. did a simple volt meter test on the alternator and its showing 14.5-14.6 on idle...too high?
also i hope it aint the battery as its a optima. :(

have u tried the fusible link for the alternator? if you have blown that no matter what volts the alternator is putting into the battery itll never charge!!!

also let me know when ur picking up the stuff.

Jon

my voltmeter on my battery shows 14.1 14.2 on idle, so i guess u'd expect to lose some current frol the alternator.
to remove the alternator do u have to remove the whole engine?

No if you slacken off belt leave on top pulley and off bottom two twist the belt to get it over the alt pulley, then remove alternator out the bottom PN* Im not running passanger side fan on engine side of raditaor tho so you may have to unplug this fan and slide it up to give you room to manoover it out the bottom.

It's the fusible link. Same thing happened to me.
are tyou tallking about the only fuse next to battery at an angle compared to the rest?

Also had alternator hassles lately next check is multi meter between alt and battery for drops!

so many small things it can be so its normally not a straight cut...
do this and its fixed :x unforchanatly

yeah the 80A fuse next to the battery(thats what it is on a rvr).
It mite be also something shorting out on the alternator causing the fuse to go.The fuse wont look like it's blown tho.

hope this helps.

Checked the amp fuse with multi meter and its fine both sides :x

It has acted weird in traffic again eg. while around 2500 rpm in 4th put foot down a little then she started to shudder backed off and was fine... foot down lightly again and was fine then looked at volt meter and it was charging ie 12.2 approx and battery light on cluster was out

It needs some hard core probing to nut out :? still have quite a few steps left to isolate it :D fingers crossed, not to long to find.

Something you can also check is the eyelet fitting on the back of the alternator (the part that has the rubber over it) isnt hanging by a few wires or corroded as you cant see this unless you pull the rubber back. If it looks dodgey i.e. green and oxidised or not holding on by many wires, cut it back and add another eyelet. Also check that your earthing points and battery terminals are in good condition.

Been there and done that  tested perfect

I have tested a large portion of what can be associated causes... it its just getting the time now to do the remainder.

I have found a few other issue's and sorted out 3 other gremlins
so it hasn't been totally pointless ;)
