I was out for a drive Sat night, and on the way home my speakers cut out, I had been cranking it all night and thought the thermal overload may have kicked in, oh well nearly home, I found tonight the fuse was blown (40A) I was a bit wary but put a new one in and it was working but then smoke started pouring out of it. I took it out and found that a transister has fried inside, is the whole amp useless now? Can I just go to Dick smith or Tandy and get a new transister and solder it in? Anyone had this happen to them? If I take it into JB or Autobarn, would they be able to send it away for repair? Any ideas as to why this may have happened?

get the part number off the transistor and see if you can get another one, and just solder it in. however there is a good chance its still stuffed.

if ya cant get the new transistor yourself. buy a new amp. otherwise you will prolly end up paying for a new unit in repair bills

What brand amp was it ...

Reason i ask is, I had my Cerwin Vega amp fry a couple of weeks ago .. Was not a fuse tho .. Can't remember what it was, but it is the second time it has happened.. It has been returned to Cerwin and I have not seen it for months... :x

hehehe sizzle :D

to me they are the output transistor to the speaker/s, not a preamp or anything like that, so they will be a decent powerful transistor.

- Find out the part number.
- It will most likely will be a MOSFET transistor (check if its P or N type), not a bipolar transistor (npn/pnp).
- Find out the pins (base/emitter/collector if its a bipolar transistor) (source/gate/drain for mosfet) and find the data sheet
- Find out its max current amplification/gain

see if you can find the same transistor or something similar :D
my amp (mono) i made at tafe still kicking strong (class A-B).

makes an amp at tafe!
that is insane....i want one too :)
i would not recommend going somewhere to get it fixed coz they will probly charge u double what the things worth in the first place.
im guessing its probly not a good brand...hence the fryage??

by the looks of that board shot, the transistor in question is not for the out put but the inverter power supply unit for the amp. from looks, its a N-Fet or N-Channel MOSFET Transistor with approx 60V 50A handling power, if i'm correct there should be 4 or 6 identical transistors including that one that is blown nere a large coil and high voltage capacitors.

when these Transistors blow, theres usualy more then one problem....

i believe Jaycar and Dicksmith dont stock these transistors from last check........ RS Components i believe do......

get back to me if you need help fixing the thing......

Thanks guys! It is only a crappy US Audio Amp from Autobarn it has done a fairly good job for the couple of years I have abused it, I asked a few guys in the trade about it today and was told simelar things. Basicly it will cost money to get a quote on fixing it and the repairs will more that likely come out above $200 and a new amp of simelar quality is only about $120
IF I can get a correct transister to fix it I will have a go but as Jayrome said there is possibly other components that have failed also but are not yet evident, looking at an Eclipse amp as a replacement, just need some cash!

i thought that board looked familiar!! the parts are like $6-10 each part, all they do is turn 12VDC into approx 50VAC using 6 transistors, large capacitors, and a hell of a coil! but to shit that transistor takes alot, which meand there would be a power supply problem to the main MOSFET transistors and or one of the MOSFETS have shitted them selfs and shorted inside....... i suggest buyin a new amp or Cashconverters for a cheapy use for now....

come to think of it, i should have one of those boards lying around somewere..... same problem......

ahahah sorry bit slow atm....... but yer cash converters sometimes have no idea what there selling so keep an eye out on there amps and stuff......

Wanna donate a transister? see if another one makes it work with out smoke coming out?

That was a great quote form a guy I spoke to today - Amplifiers work by smoke and when it comes out, they need to be sent away and have the smoke put back in and that aint cheap! (or somthing along those lines!) moral is buy a new Amp!

errr okies i'll try hunting for the bloody thing....... it was a US audio amp 4 channel with the adjusments on the front behind a plexi glass screne....

gimme a week to look for the bloody thing..... proly thworn it out by now but i'll look for ya.....
