Hi, I have been digging and digging the last few days for what turbo to upgrade too in my GSR.

Now from what I have read, most people suggest the td05 14b, that's great and all, though i can't find any of the fu*******G things for sale... Everything in my car is stock, besides Koni shocks, king springs 3inch turb back, and a turbosmart 1 stage boost controller, the motor currently has 200xxx k's on it, so i'm hoping there is still a bit more fun left in her.

So is it worth going to the 16g, get some bigger injectors, fuel pump than off I go?, or am I going to have to go down the route of evo MAF, evo ECU, Evo FMIC ( was planning on doing this next with the current setup) etc.?.

As all people, I do have a budget to abide by, and at this stage im considering holding off and trying to find a complete built 4g63t to drop straight in, though they don't seem to be the easiest of things to come by these days either :/.

Forgive me for my ignorance, as this is my first turbo car, so may need some time when people start talking about housings and shit like that lol

Advice would be great, a lot of the info I was looking at seemed to be quite outdated and need some re-assurance :)
 
Just get ecmlink for your ecu, wind in a bit more boost and tune it.

i think you can get a 16g wheel and cover for your turbo for more pep, but do the other bits first.
I think the 14b will make enough to bend rods.
Get bigger front mount or w2a later and injectors later too
 
14b's are used a lot because they are a lot more punchy and spool faster. Make a little more power ect. Once you start going bigger you will also be increasing your lag but make more power up top with some supporting mods. And with a small motor you want that power sooner not later

I know progsr was selling a 14b a few months back. Not sure if it sold.
 
join the club mate. i'm running a 16g on my 1.8 gsr motor and while not being the fastest spool it's not exactly the slowest either. you start making boost around 2.5 - 3k rpm but don't realy have full boost until 4.5 - 5k. the reason people suggest the 14b is because the hotside (part exhaust gas goes through) is the same size as the stock td04l unit at 6cm. what this means for you is that you retain a stock spool time. then the 14b compressor wheel is physically larger than the stock unit and can flow more air meaning you get more top end as it doesn't run out of puff.

i am currently trying to get the best of both world by trying to find a 14b hotside and mating that to a 16g comp wheel to allow the flow of an evo turbo but the spool i got from the gsr which should see me getting shoved right back in my seat.

The 14B is such a miserable waste of time. 7cm 16G is the answer. Coz I'm at work I can't be bothered correcting all the misinfo in this thread but it hurts my brain..

Yea, disregard anything i have posted. i have big 16g evo setup on the 93t and have had nothing smaller. i dunno the upgrade path or what turbo bolts where.

Might be slightly off topic but wouldn't a 20g have clearance issues on a 93T running the standard manifold?

while the 7cm 16g is a great turbo and one i'm currently running i'd have to say for a closer to stock spool a 6cm housing would be better suited to the 1.8 i went straight from a td04l to the 16g and the difference between the two is like night and day. the 04 had almost instant response while the 16g is much more linear and smother. the 16g is great if your spending alot of time high up in the revs but if you want quick response the exhaust housing is a touch on the large side.
 
I'd go the 14B tbh, I wouldn't want 4-5k rpms before it was spooling. Unless things have changed 10 years ago (reading here, gsr-evo club and diamond evolution if anyone remembers), people were recommending the 14b on the 1.8's, actually rarely would I go over 5k rpms anyway.
 
Ok

1. The spool time 14B vs 16G is negligable, in fact the compressors have only a very small impact on spool time in the case of TD05H 14B vs TD05H 16G. I was getting 17psi by 3800rpm on mine and if that constitutes a laggy setup then you have unrealistic expectations. If your setup is spooling later than this then your setup is shit! People are getting full boost at 5krpm? WTF? Unless "Full boost" is 25psi... HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO FUCK IT UP THAT BAD?

2. 6cm vs 7cm = fuck all difference. All you're going to do is hurt top end (which seems counterproductive to upgrading a turbo)

3. The TD04L 13G has a 5cm housing, not 6cm.

4. A 14B or 16G wheel cannot go onto a TD04L turbine/shaft

5. A 20G can fit inside a TD05H 16G cover, but even a TD06 cover will not have clearance issues (I ran a modified Toyota CT26 cover on my setup which is TD06 sized and fitted fine)

People seem to have this bizarre reaction to 16Gs vs 14B thinking OMG 16G = LAG! No one seems to think for 2 secs about the fact they have the same fucking exhaust wheel, and because of this, they respond very similarly. How a turbo responds is largely dictated by the exhaust wheel and only to a much lesser degree the compressor. Save the 6cm TD05H 14Bs for the 4G61T guys, there are guys out there with perfectly streetable GT30 sized turbos out there on 2Ls, suck it up and get the 7cm TD05H 16G or stay with the TD04L 13G if you're scared it's gonna be laggy, then crawl back into bed and wait for mummy to tuck you in and read you a bedtime story.

I agree. Have a look on eBay for a 16g the kandodynamic ones are supposed to be okay I think just under $700 to your door but at 200k without a decent tune your bottom endnprob won't last to long. Why not just save the money you'd spend and find a 63 there are a few out there. One on eBay currently out of an vr4 Rs for a good price
 
Here is a dyno graph of my fwd cb gsr lancer with vr4 motor in it. The change was from 14b td05h to 16g td05h with vr4 6cm exhaust housing. So the only change was in compressor cover and wheel. Everything else remained the same, same dyno and same day too.

In my opinion I'd stick to 14b if you're not planning to run higher boost levels of 15psi or so.

Keep in mind too if you put a td05 on a 93t and run it at the same boost level you are physically going to be pumping more air into the motor than the td04 was .therefore you will need to get a good tuner to tune the thing and check your a/f ratios across the whole rev range as the compressor map is totally different. When i changed to a t04z on my rz supra the cheapest part of the whole exercise was buying the turbo and it was a brand new hks turbo.By the time
you've spent all that money you could already have a 63t that's going to be better anyway IMO
 
TD04-19T if you dont want the lag, common upgrade for the 6G72TT, will work well with a 1.8 4G93.
