i need a new daily was thinking of getting an auto awd magna 02 or 03 model
anyone ever had 1? driven 1? what are they like?
how do they go with fuel consumption and services etc?

thanks,

nate

Our auto triptronic Ralliart Magna 02 model (non AWD) sucks a bit of juice too for a 3.5 litre.
BUT... The Magna is not as bad as the new 2011 V6 Toyota Hilux dual cab I drive to work - they are a fkn guzzler with only 550km to a tank and thats with an empty ute during freeway driving on cruise control!! Pretty **** for a new car thats a few months old and only done 20,000kms with full service history! Dont even get me started on the new V6 Commodore utes either because they are just as bad! lol... New cars are a rort IMO and the only 'green' thing about them is the colour of your money going down the drain in repayments and fuel costs. The Magna chews less fuel than those two I have mentioned hands down.
Anyhow, the last major service to the Magna was done by Mitsubishi for about $1000. Included timing belts, fluids, filters, plugs, tune, whatever.
The car is my Mrs daily runabout and has done 260,000 kms now... but still feels sturdier and drives smoother than some late model cars I drive at work B)
A lot of people might frown on the Magna name due to its early failures, but I tell you what... from 2002+ the Magnas come Mitsu 380's are great cars IMO that deserve more credit than they've been given :)
I can honestly say that driving around for work I see plenty of early 2000-2004 model Commodores broken down on the side of the freeway/highway and have never seen a Magna once on the side of the road ;)

Like everybody else has said before, the AWD magna does suck a bit of juice. But on that topic my parents 04 magna vrx(non awd) is a fuel guzzler at 13l/100km around town driving normal.I had a 01 magna vrx which was good on fuel at 11l/100km until you put the aircon on then it was 13l/100km, The autos are great and responsive and the cars are reliable. The only problem both cars have had is the fuel gauge senders stopped working which is a common fault and is a $180 part.

I work for Mitsubishi and done the service on robs magna. My boss had one for his work car and be was getting 7lts per hundred out of a 04 wagon. In the time I've been a mechanic I have only seen 3-4 magnas on tow trucks broken down. Make sure the auto has been serviced and timing belt has been done. They also like to leak a bit of oil from the tappet covers, cam seals and dizzy orings. Services are cheap and they are easily serviceable by most people at home.

My last daily was a KJ Verada wagon I put 60k kms on over 18 months. Only thing that died on me was the steering rack. Apart from that, it was an awesome car... Used to get 8.5L/100km on the open road. Not bad for a decent sized wagon I thought. Not sure what the AWD would be like.

As for 13L/100 around town- that's actually pretty good if you think about it.

Your car also sounded like a race car at one stage... Exhausts are prone to rusting as well... easy fix though.....

the AWD's are constant AWD, so they do suck juice cause of it, although if you have ever been in one... its a bloody smooth ride!...

Hi,
They are a F*&*KEN brilliant car but as said they are a little heavy on juice. They are without doubt the pinnacle of the Magna range (would have been the ralliart if the bean counters didn't squash the AWD and Recaros).

My son has one and it had 80K on it and now has 150K it has performed faultlessly. I am a big fan of the 3rd gen Magna TE -TL with the manual 3.5l being very very quick. I have had 4 magnas and have had no real problems.

As said make sure it been regularly serviced and tming belt done.
The auto has clean oil not burnt VERY IMPORTANT on magna auto oil must be good.

Here's a bit of gen info about them,
Drive train lifted from Evo 6 and gearbox EVO7, they have bigger Evo brakes 2 pot calipers and 296mm rotors.
They are like a big EVO without ACD and AYC as the 3.5l V6 pushes it along nicely.
Standard 151KW and sports/VRX 159KW. The increase in power is gained from the sports muffler(high flow).

I really cant think of anything bad other than they are heavy on fuel but put it on sequential LPG injection and that'll bring costs down.

I have the Mitsu workshop manual for the TH - TL including AWD and Ralliart on CD if you need anything.

Cheers

there very nice to drive in AWD , I have a 1998 fwd KF Verada with 367,000kms , and its drives like new , as everyone said fuel can be heavy depending on your trip

most of the AWD Magnas are pretty well mantained too , plus there are guys fitting 380 engines into the AWD's now

but for daily driving FWD is no issue at all for me , probably cheaper if something goes wrong in FWD too

i work at mitsu with trav, we only put mitsu diamond spec eng oil in them. (and i put it in my ce 1.5) awesome oil for $30 for 5L approx.
again like everyone has said sender units fail they like to squirt oil from rocker covers, cam cap and dizzy with the odd crank and cam seal.

if u do buy one make sure it has had the timing belt done when its ment to. then give her a massive going over change everything u possible can.
put diamond spec in with a couple eng flushes then change it after 5k kms then do it every 10k-15k kms. giv the auto a drain n refill then get a auto power flush carried out on it. use mits atf sp3.

hav seen a few shockers go at bout 250k+ kms. but they hav all been factory units.

enjoy!
