Well the GSR appears to be done (for now). But there seems to be something unusual, is it normal for the turbo to only really kick in at 4500/5000+RPM? The previous owner has stuck on what appears to be an Ebay spec TD05 and a big no name front mount. Would the fact that it's only a 1.8L, has a large front mount and an oversized turbo all accumulate to this large amount of turbo lag?
No there are no charge pipe leaks and the front mount isn't full of holes :p
What do you guys think about putting a smaller/original front mount back on, and a smaller/original turbo to try and get some of that low end torque back?
Thanks
Liam

Sounds like your on the right track...the td05 will most likely take longer to spool on that motor with that big cooler.
If your after something a bit smaller that will still be an upgrade over the pissy side mount the GSR has from factory, check the for sale section..there's a Legnum cooler for sale in there that will do the job nicely !

Try finding a factory Evo 1-3 cooler. I know that the j-spec gt Liberos came factory with Evo 1 front mounts and bumpers. Not sure of the turbos on them. A mate of mine had one and it was nice and punchy from just under 3grand with standard turbo. He ended up putting vr4 td05-14b on it and it still spooked up nice with more up top

Also you could reduce the length of the piping to and from the cooler by buying a cooler with the pipes on the same side. Check eBay I've seen some branded cooling pro ones on there just search for intercooler same side they have various sizes. I have a greddy gt spec cooler on my vr4'd gsr and the piping is pretty short. This is something a lot of people overlook. In particular noobs with wrx's that want big front mounts and don't reverse the intake manifold. They end up killing the turbo because it's working so much harder to fill all the extra pipe work

Could be some really bad tuning? What ecu/chip is the car running? I have driven gsr's with ebay turbos and lag has never been that bad.
If you can avoid it, do not put a 1.8l factory td-04 on there - the turbo is far too small . If lag is a concern, try and find a td-05 14b (turbos are old now, but you may be lucky enough to find one in decent condition.

I wonder if just changing the exhaust housing to the 14b housing would help with spool. Correct me if Im wrong but they a 6cm rather than the 7cm?

Car is running original GSR ECU, its got a SAFCII air flow controller (prev owner) and i have run all the percentages back down to 0, so its not adding extra fuel. the turbo has a bit stamped on it that says "Sport JDM, Part No: TD05. TB01005042" So thats why I assume its just an ebay spec turbo. So what do you guys reckon, bit of a smaller intercooler but keep the turbo? and try to reduce pipe length? What about this one

That Micky_Vr4 has for sale? too small?
I'll also mention that it's only done 180km to a full tank of BP Ultimate... And thats not from constant hooning around either. Just a few freeway trips to the licensing center

EDIT: Sorry brian I have no idea. I'm not that much of an expert. And would somebody please explain what people mean when they say "20g" and all that?

!80km to a full tank!!

rich as.....

best get a wide band on there and see what AFR is.

just curious...what colour are the injectors? is the rubber pipe where it meets the air flow meter round or oval. What number is on the ecu

I'll Go have a look, hold on a sec. Im pretty sure the injectors are stock ones. they're cream coloured. we had them out for cleaning when we had the engine out.

EDIT: Ok, injectors are definitely cream coloured ones, the pipe is a circle and the ECU has the mitsu electrics sticker with "7097" In big black bold "E2T38390" In smaller text and "031" in really small text

will check the ecu number tomorrow ...but the rest is stock from the description.

Have you open the ecu to check for a chip? if your piggy back is now doing nothing....I would be checking for other causes of excessive fuel consumption.

What size is the turbo/IC piping?
I found that if I ran 2 1/2" instead 3" pipes on my RX-7 the throttle response and spool-up was greatly enhanced :)
Also have you opened up your piping/IC to check for blockages etc?

Just stuck the numberplates on just then, finally registered! :p
We'll take the car down to you when we return those bits we borrowed from you Brian.
Rgds
