So I got meek to do my belts and pump etc this week, and came away with a few surprises. I got Meek to do this because at the same time I got him to fit my Tomei cam gears and dial my cams in (at least that was the plan). While he was there he replaced the cam seals to fix a leak and also did a quick investigation as to the reason for the leak on my turbo oil return ( I was being lazy so got him to do it while the car was in there). Turns out some genious used the wrong bolts and stripped the threads. So the sump had to come off for repair. But at least all my engine oil leaks are fixed.

I was told my car had Kelfors 272s in it, but when Chris pulled the rocker cover there was a pair of Compcams in there. Chris couldn't tell me the specs, but given that my car has lost the big overlap it used to have now that I have sorted out all its vacuum leaks and got its general tune nicer, I wouldn't be surprised if they were 264s. It'll idle with only a hint of roughness at 1000 rpm and not a definate overlap rump like it used to. Power falls of a cliff after 7000, but that might be the stock exhaust manifold.

Chris said that seeing as we didn't know what the cams were and the car runs pretty well the best way to do the cam timing was a bit of a suck it and see approach. Tweak the timing a few degrees and see if the cars performance improves. Not sure if I'll wait until I get it on a dyno to do this. But I'll finish my exhaust mods first.

On the plus side the head is being held down with ARP bolts and it has aftermarket springs and titanuim retainers. My evo II serial number turbo has an evo III turbine housing and an evo III dump attached. Now I just need to fix my leaky diff, and all of the obviously stuffed things are sorted. Then I can fit a 20g and try to blow the stock bottom end.

Cool. A dial indicator will work out how big your cams are.
Or roughly you can mark the cam pulley where the valve just starts to open and mark again when it just closes. Then eithet measure around the gear and calculate degrees from the circumference or maybe transfer the measurements to some paper and measure the degrees.
264s to 272s is 8º or about 10mm difference in circumference. The duration is measured from 0 lift, not 050" and cams are much less duration at 050 but really is a better comparison.

Yes it should be. But if you look on the bc site they measure it from 0, but they list the 050 as well. Kelfords will be measured the same. There may be 050 specs as well listed.
272 @050 are really big cams. Maybe 340s or something ridiculous

You're right Jack, there is no set standard.

Paraphrasing from "How to choose Camshafts" D.Hammil

".....there is no real set standard in the camshaft industry by which all camshafts can be rated against other similar 'grinds'.
It just depends on who measures the duration and where they measure it from".

The difference wrt duration just comes down to the different ramp rates as you mentioned.

*End hijack

lumpyvr4 nice cam sprockets. What brand are they? I just installed Arospeed ones on my car that I had lying around and they hit the timing cover -.-
