best way to convert dvd to avi?

Video Capture card and play it on your computer.
That's the dead set EASIEST.
The other option is to get a program that converts it if you've got it electronically. You can copy the entire thing off the dvd usually and convert the .dat or whatever dvd's are stored as. Programs usually cost money tho.
I've got access to a vid capture card if you can't find anything in melbs.
There should be 5-6 businesses who will do it for you cheaply too. Any video editing place.

Whats with needing a vid capture card :| Just need a DVD-ROM which 90% of computers have these days :shock:
Rip dvd to hdd using DVDDecrypter (free on internet)
Use say trial version of DrDIVX to convert ripped file to DIVX
Done.
I use a slightly more complex setup as i keep the AC3 audio in the final DIVX for that true souround sound
but makes movie bigger

For a crack for DrDIVX use http://astalavista.box.sk
You can select resulotion/bitrate to make the final DIVX smaller (but quality is lost of cause)

if you can compress it to less than a gig, I can host it.
preferably less than 700mb. I expect i'll get a lot of "offsite" traffic to it after hosting that's all.
