A bit off topic but still car related as its something worth considering. I wonder if the 'BLUE' in 'Bluetooth' has anything to do with the POLICE taking a bite out of our privacy?

I know every mobile phone with bluetooth can be hacked into by the police and your phone calls, info and data can be accessed and retrieved by them... but a discussion I had with an officer on the weekend whilst sitting in his Lancer cop car (at the ANDRA Roadshow) raised my eyebrows

After starting the conversation with 'So why are the Police getting new MIVEC 2.4 Lancers instead of EVO X's?" oh and the answer by the way was because they are following suit with Govt organisations to make a smaller footprint on the environment by using more fuel efficient cars... he stunned me with his next passage.

He continued to advise that they are trialling the new EVO X and Subaru STi as highway patrol cars in our region with advanced new equipment that decapacitiates vehicles involved in police chases. He continued to go on about how the US use those electrical spikes to shoot into cars and fry the ECU's (like those used in the Fast & Furious movie), well he smiled and went on to say... 'we're trialling something new... let me just say that bluetooth could be the best thing to ever happen to the Police!' and wouldnt elaborate anymore on it

This has racked my brain for the past couple of days... how? what the? then I thought... hang on.... what if all the new or soon to be released Commodores and Falcons and any other car with OEM built in bluetooth has it integrated into the ECU somehow and is constantly 'ON'.

Ahuh... you hear what I'm saying... Not only can the info about your car be tapped into (speed, etc), but also where you travel and the phone calls you make can also be recorded. If its constantly on unbeknowns to you it will also broadcast the conversations you have in your car (off the phone) when you get pulled over! BUT what if it also means having the capability to shutdown your car if its integrated into the ECU too!!!

Its not as far fetched as it may seem as the Police get access to all the latest and greatest technology way before the general public do. I remember back when radars were first used by the police to clock your speed and everybody thought it was just propaganda

Bluetooth is off hahahaha

I call shinanagans, i doubt its the bluetooth Rob

I think its the spikes lol

There was also on tv not long ago something about how the cops were doing a trial of a camera that sits on there dash and can detect when a car is unregistered, or the driver has a arrest warrant or is disqualified etc.. They really are doing there best to get up 2 date with technology...
Really worrying!!!

It's not really that worrying.. I mean the kind of person who (generally) drives around unlicensed and unregistered isn't the best at handling a car anyway.. so it should drop the road toll. Plus less dickheads without insurance on the road smashing into cars...

i always have my bluetooth off on my phone anyway.
i know from the mits point of view with the bluetooth we install into the cars (genuine mits gear) the unit is only connected to the stereo or multimedia centre. but theres no real connection to the engines ecu, as these cars depending upon model and trans theres several computers inside the car.

Hrmmm.. I wonder what the legal implications of having a device that can shut down your car, get details/readings etc installed without your consent. I don't want to have my car monitored by police at any point, Its like the police hacking your home pc. Its personal privacy, and I doubt it would fly here.

If i wanted to be able to track my car and shut it down from anywhere, I would get an alarm that allows me to do so.

But, lets see what they trial and how quickly it is rejected by the public and passed by the houses because "It will make Victorian Roads Safer" *cough cough* Raise more revenue *cough cough*

But wouldnt shuttin down a car be danger to the public?

Loose all steerin of the car and plow into a crowd of padestrians, not to mention puttin the driver and/or passengers lives at risk and damage to the owners vehicle

I know i read somewhere about the camera on the dash and on the officer so they can record and video the offender

Also is this even safe to bring up on a public forum for everyone to read??

Its safe, its simply discussion. Freedom of speech.. You cant get a canary for chatting on a forum :)

The same can be said "Can putting all your spec's of your car be safe to post on a public forum?"

Intersting. i dont doubt this tchit has been in the pipeline for a while.

Its simply mad to assuem they will shut a car down on the run, it has absolutely no control measures to the driver afterwards, at least with a spike strip, the clown behind the wheel could still guide it a liitle.

And i agree with the comemnt said earlier, the whole detection camera thing probably isnt that bad of an idea, at least it will tie the cops hands up pullign over the no hoper shitheads that shoudnt be on the road, and maybe free up the "pull overs" on us guys cos our rims are looking good, or our kits looking neat.

They would not shut it down, there are so many other things they could do if this was possible(which I highly doubt). They could just retard the hell out of timing or something similar to just remove all power.
Fortunately for us this tech will never effect the 4G** as we aren't really on the cutting edge :D

In the USA they have dummy cars already setup that when stolen they can follow and they shut it down on the fly, So why wouldn't the aussie cops do the same???

more technology that could possibly lead to betterment of mankind, goes straight into the hands of oppressive, power tripped, egotistical violent police officers...

first batons, then guns, pepper spray, then tazers, next bluetooth hacking that can spy on you or shut yo shi7 down..

yay... what an awesome free world... I think more Police State...

Even tho the only thing the kids in our Goulburn police college are doing is Ice, orgies & binge drinking... and that's str8 from the horses mouth...

anyone else hear stories from Goulburn?

Rob, just to be safe you better cover your car in alfoil...

I highly doubt that they will remotely shut down an offenders car, look at how badly they are getting flamed for the incident above.

Doesn't bluetooth only have a very limited distance range? If the police do decide to use this for some 'good,' wont they have to be very close to do so?

I for one hope that they do decide to use some form of bluetooth usage to bestow goodness on society, like bluejacking Miranda Kerr pictures to my phone

Yeah I saw it as well.
Those entrapment cars would be great here in Aussie Land.
Set them up in car parks- wait for assholes to steal - then stop car remotely and arrest them when it's safe...
and kick the shit out of them back at the station.

Insurance companies in the USA like them as well so it'll mean lower premiums for everyone.

I am pretty sure you can rig up an amplifier for the signal which will give you something in the range of 50 meters.

Yeh but they work for the banks, its all part of being able to track errbody =P

good that you can amplify the signal when transmitting, but bluetooth requires paring in both directions, so unless your unit had an amplifier too, it wouldnt be able to communicate back to the cop unit..

Bluetooth is secure, go look at the IEEE 802.15.1 standard and for A2DP as well. You cannot hack it without device complaince at both ends... PAIRING

Unless it self pairs itself with an incoming signal... which wont work.. it will invade the handfree device in the car... you can only be connected to a single bluetooth device at a time i think.. so does that mean even if it was true, all you had to do it pair your bluetooth up to your handsfree, fone, mates fone etc???

there is alot of things you can do with bluetooth, i have a pda phone with a hacker program installed, I can get onto peoples phones and make calls, change passwords, shut the phones down, while having my phone un detected, its pretty scary stuff
