My opinion:
Lately i've noticed there has been a lot more people joining up, which is good.
There are also a lot of new members asking questions that they haven't searched on and where they are many threads on already.
Also newbies are posting answers to topics that are incorrect to get post counts up.

If it keeps happening we are going to get heaps of threads that go now where, that people will find when they actually 'do' search, making it harder to decipher whats good information.

My suggestion
To allow this forum to grown and keep threads on track, how about a newbie section and more importantly a say 4 week waiting period (or 2 weeks) where new people can only post up in newbie section and start a members rides thread.

People should have to read (search) to get their head around things first, and save the more experienced member always having to waste time to post, "no that's not true".
What will happen is people with the knowledge wont be bother posting up corrections, and the spread of wrong info accelerates.

This will limit legit questions yes, but they can post in the newbie section, and still get a hand if their cars wont run ect.

I shouldn't have done that lol. Good way to get attention!

Back on topic. Anyone think this is a good or bad idea?

boobie pics are always great.........oh the other topic......oh yeah ok, well yep good idea. now back to boobies

personally i dissagree..

I hate it when people say "use the search function!!" when ever a new person asks a question.. they way i see it if a new thread is started then let it be a discussion point, who knows, there may be other people about who can add somthing of value that were not around (or didnt see ) for the original thread.. Yes search is great, and I use it alot, but having the original thread plus some more discussion i think is even better..

I know what you're saying lewis- but the only thing is that you get people who ask a question that was covered in a thread 3 or 4 down from the one they started.....!

It is hard having the search function not being able to search for any words with 3 or less letters, but if everyone else can do a search before they start a thread, or get told how to search, then everything will end up running a lot smoother around here, and we wont have people getting grumpy about having to answer the same basic stuff over and over again then resort to flaming noobs for honest mistakes....

The age old battle when running a forum. :)

Blocking people from posting any more than a newbie thread will simply drive them away from the forum. I'm a forum whore and like many people, I often join a forum to ask a specific question and then leave.

For instance, about a year ago my wife's Suzuki burnt through a coil over plug. She had a rarer model, and there was very little information on the net about it. I wanted to know what other model COP's fit, so we could just pick one up from a wrecker (new they were over $400 for a single unit!). I joined the most relevant Suzuki forum I could find, posted my question in the right section, had my answer in about 24 hours, and then left, never to return. The information however, remains on that forum, and will hopefully help someone one day.

We have a great member base here. 99% of our users are forgiving and supportive. People who love Mitsubishis and will put up with just about anything to see others doing good things with their car. Our moderators are relaxed, and if anything this may be a perfect situation for them to step up. If you are sick of seeing the same information twice, three times, or more, do a search and let the OP know in what thread they can find the information. If there is an answer to the thread there, and it is truly answered in the thread that you have linked to, our mods can lock the thread and hopefully the conversation will continue in the earlier thread.

I also disagree.
Unlike you though Lewis, alot of people dont bother looking for answers themselves, they want it served to them on a platter, when a simple search will find them the answer they need.
We try and refrain from saying use the search function, but repitition sometimes can be annoying too.
Back to original topic, we've discussed this in the past.
We decided against it because:
a) difficult for users to distinguish whether some questions are noobie or not.
b) input from all members on certain topics will be discouraged, as many will not bother to visit a noobie section.
c) creates division amongst the forum, we were all noobs at one stage.
d) considering we are a very "modified" orientated forum, some questions may be noob to some but not to others..
e) I also dont believe we are large enough as a forum to create a seperate section.

Basically, as Lewis mentions, we want to try and create discussion, and leave room for further input on topics, rather than seperating members based on their knowledge.

Having said the above, we're still open to accept others opinions on the topic.

As long as this forum doesn't turn into another NS.com !

But that is highly unlikely because, generally speaking, you have more monkeys driving all assortments of nissans than early-model mitsus!

And that is what makes us very different. Most of us on here are sort of "do it ourselves" sort of people, and honestly I don't think THAT many of our newbies want information on a silver platter - they are willing to research it themselves.

That and what "we" do (collectively everyone on this site) is different to the standard "install coilovers, dump on the ground, install bolt on FMIC, crank up boost, install exhaust, go drifting" that you get on a site like NS.com (I know it's not completely like that but you know what I mean).

No one person on here is doing the exact same thing as another. Sure, everyone shares their ideas and solutions but because we have so few bolt on options for Mitsubishis (except for the latter models), our users need to think for themselves that bit more.

Ger,

Do as I often do and give them the whole "this has been discussed a few times before" then reference some of the previous forum discussions. This also comes in handy when people are searching in the future as a lot of the information will be a 1/2 clicks away (rather than have to search through 100's of posts). IMHO a newbie section can be decent idea, but we dont need more sub-forum - people should use their intro thread for noob questions.

I agree with Velocity Racing with the whole "use the search function" response. Even though I may have done it myself a few times over the years it is a pretty poor way to respond and doesn't really benefit anyone. I dare say that here at 4gtuner we could answer "use the search function" to 99% of the new threads which pop up - but that wouldn't be fun would it!

And now back on topic!

I was lured into this thread by the very mention of the word 'boobies'!!! I got to the bottom of page 1 very disappointed until Timmy pulls through with post #16 giving me exactly what I clicked on this thread to look for :w00t:
What were we talking about again?
Tim, you deserve a rep point for this one!
