building a forged 4g93T .....it begins now

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

^that sounds like a great idea. any machining work required for the pistons & what spec were the rods?
cheers

Why not just go 4AGZE pistons then, mine were cost me 100$ and teamed up with a set of eagle copy rods was a bullet proof set up.

i was thinking about doing that but....{and I dont want to sound like a trite dickhead here}..... wanted to do it with parts designed for the engine. Because I didnt have that much info on the ze slugs and what was needed to get them to fit. so i went with the piston rod combo from euroexport.

getting pissed off with mechanical noise this has.....the knock sensor is retarding timing, Cant tune the bastard now!

Have you tried running a hot thermostat get the engine temp up a bit..

Have you tried a 70 weight oil yet? worth a shot doing both I reckon.. considering you cant tune it because of excessive knock..?

Pretty sure I have a spare (hottest available) for the 1.8

I will try the oil.....but even running it on grease isnt going to kill 12 degrees of knock.......

fuck!.......this engine

cams are stock

next problem is the massive over boost.....2 bar! tought I got away with it...but

lifted the head ......pressurised the cooling system. blew the the heater elbow apart. car full of steam is not a good thing

well one good thing.....I am going to get a thicker head gasket. AND it looks like I solved the check engine light issue.

checked the knock semsor for the third time and it was loose..and found a dodgy wire in the ignitor plug. Or maybe the thicker oil helped....who knows...at least it is a step in the right direction.

well the tuning is progressing.......reached 80 percent duty cycle on evo 510cc injectors. that is with the tdo5 14b.....which is starting to drop boost at 6500{reaches 1590hz and falls from that after 6500} boost at at 1 bar

it was limited at 8250.....one log saw over 8350!! oops std valve springs! so lowered the limit to 8000......but it screams for revs and strangely still feels like it is pulling

I have ironed out the knock using std unleaded.....for street use. {The yanks run some pretty big numbers on 93 octane} Standard unleaded should keep her happy enough as she is as poor as a church mouse while studying to become a pig.

yep I said PIG.

for track use it will have a second tune on 98 to see how much timing I can get into it.

intake temps are a bit high......so we may need to change the stock cooler but I will wait and see.

I think judging fr4om the hiss noise ....the standard exhaust {with no rear muffler} has become a restriction.{she can pay for a new one! bloody thing is already into me for over 3k plus what she has forked out} it isnt noisy at the moment without the stock muffler as the pipe size is only about 2"....but back in the old days that was now a lot of group N evos were run.

had that noise u described already and it was the headgasket being too thin, the piston was lightly tapping the head. i switched to a thicker headgasket (a composite one and the noise vanished) b4 u do anything else get a thicker headgasket and ur problem will be solved

thanks for your suggestion....but

the pistons are at least 20 th below the block.....yes I know rods will stretch

I have already changed the gasket to a thicker one...and still it knocks

You do realise 93oct fuel from the usa is the same as 98oct here. They use a differant measurement to get there octane rating. I wouldnt pull more than 8k, They seem to drop power and torque after 7k without big lift cams and the rod ratio on a 4g93 is a pathetic 1.49.

so where is this information about 98 octane of USA fuels from.....since there pretty much only two world standards for the test

research octane number or motor octane number.

there is one other RON that shouldn't be confused with the R.O.N{road. octane. number}......that number is RON + MON divided by two....which ends up inflating one number but is the most commonly used method of fuel companies in north America.

ron and mon will give a different number with RON being slightly higher.....not that they will down grade octane to 93 from 98 tho...because both are using the same single cylinder knock engine as the basis of the test.

as too the revs........

winding in more boost tomorrow....but if it is still dropping away too much afetr 6500 then its not worth pushing to 8 even
