For ages I have been having problems with rotors warping: I think after 12 months, and the second time I have had them machined, I have found the problem:

The caliper on the L hand side does STICK more than the right. It doesn't move unevenly, but just requires firmer pressure to "float" it.

Now to the question: On one of the bolts or "pins" that allow caliper float (the upper bolt) there is a bit of rubber on the end. When I remove this, the float is much better.

Can I remove this bit of rubber permanently ?

The lower bolt doesn't have it, so I can't see why there would be a problem. Thanks in advance

Do you mean the rubber boot over the bolt?

It is supposed to be there to keep the grease in and the dirt out (which would cause the caliper to stick).

Perhaps you could get some new boots for them and then pack them with a good quality Lithium grease which should get them sliding smoothly again.

that rubber should be there,

the caliper will probably float too much and make alot

of noise with out it. (rattle)

a good clean and regrease is the way to go.

Ok, so I won't remove the rubber.

Clean as in, using degreaser spray, and then wipe it out ? I tried just removing the existing grease with paper towel, and regreasing and that didn't seem to make a difference.

The grease I have is some Castrol grease suitable for high temperatures (I think for wheel bearings etc.) It seems a bit thick. Anyway, I'll see how I go with proper degreaser. It will have to wait however, until I get back from holidays in two weeks !

Thanks for the replies

You can just wipe most of the old stuff off, but to clean it properly its best to use a product like Wurth Brake Cleaner.

Its better than normal degreaser as it doesn't need to be washed off. It wipes clean and leaves no residue. Normal degreaser won't clean them properly either.

That wheel bearing grease should be ok. Is should be blue or red. The red is designed for brakes though as it keeps the rubber boots in better condition over the long term.

Don't worry about it being thick, that way it is harder to ooze out.
