cam position sensor troubles

Hi guys my evo 4 rs is not running the best, it is like hesitating/missing when accelerating and wont start when hot so iv cheaked for any fault codes and theres code 23 witch is the cam position sensor, does that sound right?? :unsure: also iv pulled the sensor out and its covered in oil, is that normal or is there a seal that needs replacing. Any help is greatly appreciated cheers.

Hey mate,

common problem on many engines that share the same sensor.

It will throw a code from time to time then evenutally let you down totally and kill the engine whilst driving at speed by over fueling.

They are more a less a sensor that is there to protect the engine under a cam belt failure.

My evo was doing similar things but was not throwing a code until it totally failed, after changing the sensor good as gold and has been for 20k kms +.

I think the sensors are a lil expensive in oz though? maybe around $200 mark? about a third of that over here in Japan.

Good luck with it, but change it out before it totally lets you down.
