hey guys,
just wondering if anyone has had any experience using crower cams or any other of their products. Everyone seems to be using HKS. I got a quote for the Crower 264/272 cams and it came in about $200+ cheaper than the HKS cams!

from what i've read
crower have a lumpier idle

as for performance
have a read bud

Conclusion:

We reached the limitations of the 16G turbo during this test. The turbo would not make any more power nor would it hold more than 20psi of boost at higher RPM's. When the boost was turned up to 25psi the torque went to 350ft-lbs (HKS 272's) but the boost again would fall to 20psi and only make 327whp. From the dyno graphs it appears that for the best track times the HKS 272's would be the best choice. With a larger turbo choice (T3/T4) I think the difference in high RPM horsepower would be more apparent and would reflect better on the more aggressive camshafts. Time permitting we might run a test between a few of these camshaft on car with a larger turbocharger. In the meantime we'll be installing an FRH intake manifold and less restrictive intake tract on the 16g powered test car to see if we can squeeze a little more airflow out the little guy. I Think meek on club vr4 sells HKS cams at $550 per camshaft
I got quoted US$568 for a set of Stage 2 crower camshafts

No, it isn't
just got a quote for them from rocket industries in Australia
for 264/272 $899.33 (crower)
for 272/272 $1035.18 (crower)
cheaper if you have a racing licence

Try tighe cams, they are in queensland. Got some made up for the evo, havent been used yet but came highly recommended by neal lowe

slightly off topic, i need cams aswell, but i cant find anywhere that has cams listed for the galant. my question is, can evo 1,2 or 3 cams work in the galant head as i can get a hold of those ones.

ANy info would be appreciated. Thanks

sorry for the slightly off topic, but is is a thread about cams.

I can get you HKS cams for a VR4 for around $999. Yes they're the same as E1-3.

264/264?

HKS 272 cams (10.3/9.8mm) have more lift that the Crower 272 cams (9.98/9.63mm), but slightly less intake/exhaust lift than the Crower 280 cams (10.44/9.93mm). I read up on a review between the Crower 280 vs HKS 272 on a website in the U.S, so I will post the results in this thread when I get home from work. From memory it was said the HKS 272 were the better cam overall (low/midrange/top end) but it was only a comparison using the stock 16G turbo or something not so large from memory. Anyway, stay tuned for a read late this afternoon

I'm sure I posted the Crower cam specs before somewhere but here goes again  Dont pay attention to the top grey area of the table as its for non turbo cams. The rest of the table in white are for turbos and you can see the specs for yourself... I got a set of the 280 Stage 3 3/4 race cams in my beast and cant wait to turn key and listen to it breath like an asthmatic

OK, info as promised:

The Crower Stage 3 cams were tested by Automotosports.com.

Coincidentally the test was done using a 16G turbo, so the results show almost exactly what you would be getting with your setup. Personally, I would choose the HKS 264/272 combo with your setup. The Crower Stg3 cams look more like high rpm cams for drag racers with raised redlines and big turbos. They sacrafice low and midrange power for ultimate top end. But as you can see, the 16G runs out of flow above 6k rpm, so there's no point in running big cams with small turbos, it's a mismatched combo.

You can't tell what the top end power is like from that dyno chart because the 16g turbo runs out of steam at 6k rpm. I guess I'm just trying to extrapolate what the dyno would look like if they had used a bigger turbo. What I can see is the HP curve is rising nicely, pulling away from the stock power curve from 5.5k to 6k rpm when all of a sudden at 6k it dives. If you think it's the cams just look at the torque curve, there is a slight downward kink right at 6k, too. The turbo craped out just as the cams were starting to pull hard.

My comment that the Crower stage 3 cams sacrafice midrange power comes from comparing it to cams that make really good midrange power, such as the HKS 264/264 and 264/272. I didn't mean to imply that crowers were worse than stock. Clearly they're not. But since Automotosports comments that the Crower stage3 cams increase lag by 400 to 500 rpm, I'd say that might hurt midrange somewhat.

One may see - based on this simple fact - that the Stg3 cams are not any more high RPM cams than the 264s (unless the turbo craping out at 6K theory doesn't someohow apply to the 272s).
Furthermore, eventhough the 272s outperformed the Stg3 cams past 6K (which would obviously make them even more high RPM cams than the Stg3 cams in the case of the 16G), they also outperformed the Stg3 cams anywhere from 3K to 4,1K (which would obviously make them even more midrange cams than the Stg3). On the other hand, the Stg3 cams have the smoothest HP and torque curves which might make them more suitable for autocrossers or daily drivers. In any case, literally any combination of the HKS cams will outperform the Stg3 in the midrange and won't be outperformed by the Stg3 cams past 6K.
However, although the 272s will give even the 16G a bit more top end pull than the 264s or the Stg3 cams, I agree that the 264/264 or 264/272 combos would be the best cams for street/strip use with the 16G due to their midrange performance.

Interesting read.. here are details of my dyno run:

ET and MPH

Best ET 12.09
Best MPH 118.76

Power 219.7KW (6500rpm) - 295HP ATW

Didnt run the car on higher boost or up to 7500rpm as i would like because on the first run the leaky head gasket gave up.

I have 264/264 HKS camshafts with a 16G turbo.
Im contemplating going 264/272

Jon

Hey guys, is 272/272 too unbearable for daily driving? From your experience, would it be wiser to go with a 264/272 combo? What sort of benefits can I expect from upgrading cams? Mid range torque? top end?
