hi guys

i really need your help i currently bought a gsr with a 4g63t engine in it that turned out having a soft head and damaged bores and smashed bearings.
i was looking at bringing in a engine from the states but coin has stopped me in my tracks.

so the next thing i thought i could do is buy a evo 1 4g63t engine from a importer that is stock, have it fitted, then bolt on what i can to generate the most power out of it safely.

my question is how much boost (PSI) can you run through these engines safely providing the engine is in a good state?

and how much horsepower can you get out of these safely on stock internals?

iv asked numerous imorters for a evo 3 engine but only 2 have said they have evo 1 engines =\

I wouldn't be putting much more than 17-18psi through an engine with stock internals (with the right supporting mods of course) ..especially if you want it to last very long..Any more than that, its not a matter of if...its more of, when, will it let go.

Depending on condition etc, do a compression test

Also when you get the engine, i recommend changing the head gasket, water pump, timing belt and tensioners

Coz u dont know how long that engine has been sittin out for

Once u do that u can run safely on 16psi, can give it 18psi every now and then

On 18psi, you should see around the 150kw at all 4

if u want more boost, throw a stand alone ECU in it and some more supporting mods

hey thanks for the heads up ill most likely just stick to 16 pound to be safe then. have any idea how much horsepower atw u can put through a stock engine?????

Mine actually went TICK TICK TICK, then TICK CLUNK TICK, then CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK, then i couldnt hear the noises over my filthy vulgar outburts lol

There is a jap wreckers in clontarf Brisbane that's had an evo3 long motor for quite a while now they are trying to sell. I've dealt with them before and they are pretty good. Freight won't cost much either I think around $150.00 Aus wide from memory. They have it listed on ebay or check their website www. Japanautos.com.au
They even offer a lay by plan if your a bit short on cash. It's listed at $2200.00 on eBay but tony would prob do you a deal outside eBay as ebays fees are quite high and he's had it for quite some time. I looked at it a while back when I was their buying other parts. From memOry it has around 80k on it

Get a sonata engine and put a set of turbo pistons and bigend bearings in it and will still be cheaper than buying a importers evo engine, and it will be fresh as well.
I paid $150 for my first/last one
The only downside is that the cam journals are slightly smaller than Evo from memory. Is yours yours a 6 or 7 bolt, I could only find 6 bolts from memory.

On that note of the capabilities of 4G63's. I've got a stroked 2.3ltr (TD06) and was wondering the same thing. Compression is fine etc. I recently purchased the vehicle and wanna know the boost range to safely drive with. Currently peaks out at a massive 28PSI!! Yes i'm aware that's rather high. Nick from NA Motorsports said the same. Contacted the previous owner and he reckons it was tuned for 28psi. Does this sound plausible???. I'm not dissing the info given to me...more curious to hear if this is a common. If it makes much difference...i'm running an Evo VII ECU which was tuned for ACT temps.

its not overly uncommon these days, its obviously a built motor as Im sure it would have shit the bed already if it wasnt.

Must have a nice mid range punch on that boost?

Yeah it's a nice mid range punch I must say. But I don't often give it the opportunity to reach 28psi. A good tune will sort things straight I'm sure. Any suggestions on some decent tuners in South East QLD?

1. Pull the ecu and see what it is that is making this bad girl tick. Hopefully something that you can monitor knock easily.
2. Get a wideband do you can see how much the bitch drinks.

The guys on here that are smarter than me will tell you if it safe or not.
My understanding is, if it not knocking, it's ok.
Wideband will tell you if you can push it further
