Does the sensor in the cat do anything? I'm guessing there is some sort of air/fuel adjustment that is made dependent on it? A lot time ago (in the early 00s!) someone told me that this is a backyard way of making the car run richer.

Reason I'm asking is that mine is busted (cable snapped). Just wondering whether I should replace it.

Isn't it for assisting fuel trim for cold start if you're running a 2-wire O² sensor instead of the 4-wire- to show the ECU that the exhaust has reached a certain temp? When I lived in NZ we never used cat converters- it often threw the CEL if you didn't earth the sensor after removing the cat.

In my experience, cat temp sensors are used to make the engine run rich until it is up to temperature. Manufacturers started fitting them as legislation began changing to account for cold starts which meant the cat was not fully functional so they had to find a way to get heat into the cat as quickly as possible. I can't confirm that this is the purpose of the sensor you are describing but I know that generally with manufacturers, this is the case.

If you remove it, the light will turn on. just earth out the wire to it, pretty sure its a red/whiye stripe. That way the light wont be on

Or hook the wire up to a shift light so that it flashes when to shift

I had a similar issue i had to get a new cat convertor sensor, then check the calibration on it, went to bunnings picked up only the finest broom handle $1.49 could buy.

Remove the cat convertor then plunge the handle into the cat convertor, if it doesn't go right thru, it's fucked, when it goes right thru and out the other side, the cat is good.
