center diff?????

as i drive the car forward i can here what i thought was a cv problem, i replaced the drive shaft and the noise is still there. i am now starting to thing the canter diff???
as i drive forward (only) i can here a broken axle sound (ping) (constent when moving), it comes from under the car, it doesnt matter if the wheel is turned or not, it is still there. any ideas

not saying this is your problem. but when i brake the centre diff it usually doesn't make noise until it got load on it.

on my front wheel drive gearboxes i used to break the diff pin and it would make noises when driving.if you look at your gearbox oil it will be silver when it goes. also when the broken pin wears the gearbox away it starts to get little lockups.
but i dont know how strong the vr4 diffs are.

yes, mine only makes noise when it is under load.
