Don't talk to me about jon's clutches...

as mum says, "If you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!"

brand... what should you get... etc. I think this is all very valid discussion.

dre, im guessing you're using an exedy?, which one in particular? how is it for daily driving?

I use the 3 puk ceramic button, its awesome. All the grip in the world, which is important especially if you drag alot, with a heavy(ish) car like the VR4. IMO its streetable, I dont have issues using it as a daily driving clutch, some others may disagree. Handles 200kw fairly easy.

The ONLY drawback of this clutch is the amount of driveline vibrations is causes between 80-60kph during decelleration. Its kinda hard to explain until you go for a drive. I've been doing some snooping around to see what causes this, i'll start a thread up kinda soon.

I've also owned 2 of the fullface ceramic jobs in my time, one in a mildly modded 4G93t, and the other in a mildly modded 4G61t, both did the job, and did it well. If mitsi use Exedy clutches as OEM, then you cant really look past them as replacements, especially when its important because your clutch puts your power to the ground.

are you going on the cruise coming up?

you cant slip the clutch to launch it with a button clutch can you?

You can, its just that you have a whole lot less to play with.

im using a 4puck ceramic, its great
very bitey at first, after a while, it drives pretty well (maybe i've gotten used to it)

you have very minimal play to slip it in, but u can slip it..

my opinion

HD organic - street car, near stock power
Sports organic - street car, almost factory like feel, i'd say good for under 160kw's without too many launches
5 puck ceramic - street / race, very bitey, good for around 160+ kw's, awesome for launches

the less pucks, the more power u will hold, the harsher the ride.

also look into the pressure plate
2600+ lbs is good for big power.
not too heavy on the leg also

but in my opinion, go for the 5 puck for a mild street car, which is still quite drivable (hard at first if u have never driven a ceramic clutch before) but u wont regret it. (LASTS A WHOLE LOT LONGER TOO!!)

ive got the same clutch as dre's - the ceramic 3 puck.
i reckon its fantastic! takes a bit of getting used to after driving on the standard clutch but it is definately worth getting used to when you notice how well it grips!
i dont thrash the car either, i usually just drive it very sedately to work and back and i dont have any problems with bunny hopping, etc.
you can slip it a little bit, not as much as with a standard clutch, but generally you seem to need more revs to do so.

Approx. 7 years ago, I had Direct Clutch make a std but heavy duty clutch for my last vr4. They used an evo 3 pressure plate and upgraded it to about 2600 pounds and used a standard friction plate. The clutch was like a standard clutch to drive but the pedal pressure required was alot greater (it sucked in traffic because your leg got sore). BUT, I would not get that type of clutch combination again. It held my modest power (approx. 250 hp) no probs but advances in friction materials since then means you can get better clamping with less pressure and the same driveability.

I can't tell you what to use, but I can recomend that you don't use a heavy pressure plate with a stock friction plate. There are better ways to do it now.

Also, when you get your clutch and flywheel, have it all balanced individually and then assembled and balanced again. Last time (7 years ago), it cost me about $100 to have this done, Direct Clutch organised it all. No point balancing your engine if the bit hanging off the end of it is out of whack.
