Conversion thought . . .

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

I'm sure evo4-9 come up at auctions from time to time. Rolled, water damaged, stolen, interior fire. Etc. I used to follow the wrx and a sti would come up every 12 months or so in Perth.
So would be more often over east

Its not that I disagree with you Adrian...but.... I think you missed Hypo's attempt at sarcasm?

That is a bit harsh.I thought I did reasonably well.

Sure but why the hell would you bother. Just buy a EVO VI and be done with it. If I had money to throw at something like this it would something cool unlike this ridiculous proposal.

Just thought about this more and I have decided that I would build a XU1 Torana with a RB26.

For the young ones out there.

theres that mustang out of with the 26 or was just just hollywood? I like the old school car with the new age engine/drive lines etc :)

Thanks for the replies guys, even though i see we got little side-tracked.

So in theory its very much doable , and will not cost $1millin dollars.

I guess the best way to describe as to why one would do this (not myself in any near future as im not loaded with cash) is same case as to why people put fj20 into a datto 1600 shells and spend ridiculous amount of money on the rest of the build. If you are in love with history of the Evo3 and like how it looks then its understandable. If you are rolling around in a GSR as a " this car will do for now" then its a little silly to even think of doing this.

Im in process of getting ready for a 4g63 conversion and was just curious with what was involved if one was to step out of the norm. Same reason as to why i sold my perfectly running 01 GT forester to buy my POS.... i just love how these things look and drive :)

IMO If I was to do this conversion I would change it up and maybe go forward facing turbo with a few tricks. Something different from the 'stock looking' most are out there for these days.
The engine conversion would be half the surprise once you were to open the bonnet anyway.

Putting a newer 4g63 into a EVO III is nothing like putting in a FJ20 in a Datsun 1600 which is already north south facing and simply requires a cross member and a smaller changes.

If you are in love with the history of the car leave it standard. You sound like the rotary guys who cram 13b turbos into R100s and wonder why they are worth less than an original.

I've considered doing this... And the reason i had is that our cars are much lighter than the later cars (there were less pedestrian impact requirements in the early 90's, and we don't have airbags) and therefore faster. What i would love to do is put a 9 engine and 6 drivetrain (and 6 suspension etc) in... I reckon that would be an awesome weapon.

From the research I've done, the ce9a has an almost identical chassis to the cp9a so besides moving the engine mounts, there isn't a lot of fabrication involved. Just get a front cut, and later get a rear cut (or find a wrecked 6) and just start transfer everything (you would need to mod the 6 front guards because of the different indicators).
Personally i think the early evos look the best which is why i want to do this eventually.

Similar chassis yes but not similar body. The evo4+ body panels don't bolt up to the evo123. The doors don't even fit

True... But the front guards fit (the indicator cutouts just need to be modified)... Quite a popular mod in the UK is to fit the 6 guards & rear flares to allow bigger wheels (obviously the front bar needs modifications to widen it at the edges to match up)
Besides... The 3 body looks better in my opinion.

Throw a Rotary in it, that will shock alot of people

Nope, been done, in a Lj many many years ago, here is another one tho...

Also, someone mentioned a 1/2j torana, also, been done.

As i mentioned earlier, ANYTHING is possible, only limit is your budget.

I was thinking the other day... in the evo 10, the engine is mounted backwards (i.e. turbo is facing firewall), but is mounted in the same direction as 5+ (i.e. flywheel on passenger side).
Therefore wouldn't it be easier to rotate one of those 180 degrees (so turbo faces radiator) and drop it into a evo 3?
It would have to be cheaper than trying to fit a 5-9 engine.

I assume you would need to make custom engine mounts, but what about the gearbox bellhousing?
