I'm running a spark tech COP upgrade and am having issues with fouling the plugs. It stars fine then after 10-15mins, starts misbehaving and backfiring. The set-up is Autronic SMC, two bosch 008 igniters then the four coils. My tuner seems to think the plugs aren't getting enough voltage to get to self cleaning mode so we have added another to igniters so they are running one igniter per coil but now it won't spark at all. Any suggestions?
 
self cleaning mode? Is that some fancy Autronic feature?


I am running a COP setup with dual, dual igniters (not a typo). The only times I fowl plugs at idle are when I run too colder plug for too long, or have it running too rich.

I've fowled BPR8ES quite a few times, I usually stick to the 7 heat range.

Leaning the idle out should bring up the EGT, as well as adding some more timing, this should help with the plug fowling.


As for why it's nots running now, someone mucked up the wiring or the setup in the Autronic.
 
First of all, what plugs?
Secondly, what afr at idle?
Thirdly, what ign timing at idle?
Fourth, fuel pressure?

You would want to idle smooth but as lean as possible. I aim for 13-14 to 1. I know guys who idle even leaner. Depending on your injectors and motor, it may not like it. My old Rochester injectors liked 10:1 otherwise it would stall.
 
Is it Waste spark still or direct fire with the 2 extra igniters? And what plug gaps? I use to run bc9es and only had drama's in christchurch winters. As to4garret said feed a heap of timing in, (Im asuming you have big cams too) the only problem you run into sometimes with more timing is that its harder to get it to idle low. Usually it easier to foul them when cold starting because the plug isnt up to operating temp, I would be checking the tune before fucking around, sounds more like a correction is occuring.
 
Thanx for the help. Turns out the when running CDI or igniter/coils with the SMC, it knocks the firing order out of sync. All sorted now have started running it in. Is anyone else running a vacuum canister or pump. My brakes are shit! Makes for an interesting drive....
