Crank pulley wobbling

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

I have had a wobble for a while and recently i thought my water pump was making noises because its had a small leak for a while, today i got it back from the mechanic with a new harmonic balancer and a new water pump. the balancer is still wobbling and i can still hear the noise.. ive been driving like this for a while and the noise only happens after the car has warmed up and ran for abit. it still seems to drive fine what could it be?

Are you sure its a new replacement? Is it OEM or a POS solid alloy crank pulley?
I hope you invested in an OEM pulley/harmonic balancer or if you had money to burn, a fluid filled one.
If you got a 2nd handy maybe its rooted too? If you need a new OEM one hard and fast, Meek sells EVO 1-3 ones for $132 + GST http://www.meek.com....&product_id=102

If it is a new crank pulley/ harmonic balancer, then you have a serious problem with either the bolts not screwing all the way into the crank, or you have excessive crank movement and the possibility of main journal bearing wear from prolonged operation with a rooted and off-balance crank pulley.

im quite sure its a new one... thats not good news could it have anything to do with the clutch i only really noticed it afte my clutch was changed

Its only a exedy hd nothin crazy. It hasnt gotten any worse since it onlyakes noise when its really hot and its not knocking as far as I can tell

The last serious harmonic balancer wobble I saw , and it come with a clanking rattle at idle that went away with a few revs ... was the crank fractured thru at the No 1 main bearing journal.. And that was a dead stock , not driven hard VR4 !!

Well if you have checked that the crank bolt's fully tight, then for your sake, I hope its a worn or keyed out crank sprocket due to excessive wear/wobble. Its probably got some play in it when it slides on the front of your crank. That'll be worth checking or replacing before preparing for the worst case scenario lol - see pic of the sprocket.

Just in addition to my post a minute ago, actually with the timing cover off and the ignitor unplugged so there is no ignition to start the engine, get someone to crank the engine over whilst you are watching the sprocket on its own. See if the sprocket has a wobble in it when its turning.

Well nothing should really provided things arent loose. But if you had a loose crank bolt and the pulley was wobbling, the vibrations could have keyed out the sprocket enough for it to have some play in it. The play would look exaggerated once you bolt the pulley on. Or perhaps even the 4 x threads in the sprocket that the pulley bolts into have damaged or broken and they arent holding the pulley on good. Its worth checking.

is this a 63 or 93? i had a similar thing on mine where it had come loose/possibly not done up right it ended up chewing out the key way and constantly working the bolt loose.

the harmonic balancer had chewed out the key way and worn the key way crow 3/4 of the way around the entire pulley.

i'd be pulling of the balancer and checking the key way and the balancer for excessive wear.
speaking of this. Ive just put my timing belt back on my 4g93t and I noticed my crank gear drive for the timing belt has abit of play because the key is abit lose. wondering if anyone knows if these are easy to obtain as I have it out and yeah would rather replace it while its out

I found the same problem when re assembling my engine. It'll be loose because the crank is worn where the key sits and it's no longer a perfect half moon.

The way I solved it was to slide in a tiny piece of sheet metal to pack it tight again. Did the job no worries.

If this moves around it will throw the timing out so make sure you sort it before putting the engine back in.

yeah ive taken the half moon out and am taking to a engine conditioner up here in Townsville to see if he can match its original width or even 1 thicker to try and make that fit lol
