It started as a small tapping sound coming from the engine as I drove then started getting louder and louder. On idle I noticed the crank pulley has a wobble in it and a sound like a bird coming from it lol do I just need a new harmonic balancer or could it be something to do with the actual crank?

Make sure no birds are lodged in the timing cover.

The pulpy itself isn't loose is it? If it wobble and is on tight then the crank itself would be out of alignment/shape. If it was the balancer then the shake would be the whole motor wouldn't it?

I'd start by taking timing covers off and cranking by hand. See if everything looks out of place

Spoke to a mate who told me to try full lock the steering wheel to the left and then depress the clutch to see if the revs dropped, revs stayed the same so he seems to think it's not crank walk and maybe the rubber on the pulley maybe goners. Cars off to springy motors on Thursday to check it out.

I have about 6 spare pullies here if you need one :) also what rubber ate you talking about. I don't remember anything rubber on my crank or pully when doing my timing

I probably just never noticed is all. Ha ha. All I noticed was 4 bolt holes, and a dowel pin for alignment. Ha ha. I'll have a closer look at the pully when I'm in the shed next. I didn't say it wasnt there, just that I didn't notice it. Wasn't smart ass questioning was actually asking where on the pully the rubber was because in curious :)

The rubber is in between the outer pulley and the main body of the pulley.

EvoMyk- why don't you change it yourself..its quite easy to do?
If its wobbling its definitely fucked so the sooner you change it the better.
I wouldn't be driving it either, if it lets go it could cause some chaos !

as above, very easy job, no special tools required. check the 4 bolts first, and inspect the rubber while your there.
The crank bolt doesnt hold it on like 93 engines

is this a 63 or 93? i had a similar thing on mine where it had come loose/possibly not done up right it ended up chewing out the key way and constantly working the bolt loose.

the harmonic balancer had chewed out the key way and worn the key way crow 3/4 of the way around the entire pulley.

i'd be pulling of the balancer and checking the key way and the balancer for excessive wear.

Common problem. Don't let it separate. If it does, you'll end up burning holes through your timing cover and possibly damaging your timing belt.

To do the job you will need to jack the front end up, pull off the left front wheel, pull off the plastic cover in the wheel well, loosen your alternator, air con ps belts, undo the 4 bolts holding the crank pulley on. If you don't have a rattle gun, it could be tricky to break the bolt tension as the crank might spin with it. You could put it in gear and hope that the weight of the car holds the crank in position. Just make sure your car has the hand brake on and is chocked. Don't let your car fall off the jack stands. Once the pulley is off, remove and replace. put everything else back together. Replace any belts that looks old. Check your air con tensioner pulley and if worn, replace. Good time to replace your water pump if you need to. Other things you could do while in there are oil filter housing gasket if leaking, timing belt if due and the list goes on.

Not a difficult job, just a dirty and time consuming one.

Good idea to clean the timing cover marks and colour with white texta. Also mark the new pulley mark with white texta too. It will help you read your timing marks when checking.

I might have a crack at it tomorrow, Baz if putting it in gear doesn't work and the bolt keeps spinning is there another way to hold it in place to loosen it?

I definately haven't been driving the car, the noises coming from the engine scared the fk outta me lol I parked it Friday night and it hasn't moved since.

As Jack stated would help, just depends if you can get your hands in there.
You could attach a breaker bar & socket to the bolt holding in sprocket to the crank and wedge it with the ground.

Or borrow a mates electric rattle gun.

Correct.

See my initial post. "undo the 4 bolts holding the crank pulley on"
My comment above states to "attach a breaker bar & socket to the bolt holding in sprocket to the crank and wedge it with the ground".

This would stop the crank & pulley from spinning if he is having trouble with any of those 4 bolts. They usually come off quite easily but i've seen quite a few with loctite which needed a bit of extra effort..
Another tip is to undo the 4 bolts before you take all the belts off. The added friction should hold the crank pulley in place and stop it from spinning.

the pulley should pass past the crank bolt and chassis rail.
if my fluid damper can get passed a standard one does.

I will confirm you should be able to undo the 4 harmonic bolts with out locking the engine down if you cant they were too tight.

but i would be checking the crank bolt too, as if it comes loose the timing gear will move out from the crank with the harmonic attached and there is enf clearence on the shaft to have a wobble
out at the belt diameter.

I've never seen a 4g63 harmonic spit the rubber? just lucky I guess
