hi members

i have a problem with my lancer gsr which has been on going for along time.

i have just had every single bush in my car replaced as well as rear diff and diff cradle, tail shaft, transfer case,

now what is happening is the rear end of my car locks up when doing a full lock turn left or right. the rear wheels feel like they lock up and skip around the corner, like a locker diff, wtf is going on ????

there is another member on this forum that is having the same problem with there car as mine and can not find the problem, i have been told it could be the viscus or something like that ????????

guys please help this is really getting annoying, any other info u need just ask me

cheers

Just a few questions because you might get asked by other people to help solve your issue lol :)
1. What's the history of what's been happening?
2. Does it happen at low speed or high speed corners?
3. What is your gearbox code? Will help determine what it is and if you have a front LSD or not.
4. Do you know what brand and grade oil you are using in the gearbox?
5. Are you running 4 identical rim and tyre sizes all round front and rear?
6. Have you ever taken the rear diff out and seen if it is a mechanical type? If so. do you know what sort of oil you are using in the rear diff?
7. Have you had the wheels off the ground in all 4 corners and tried driving. Do you notice any noises coming from the front or the back?
8. Do you know what sort of oil you are running in the transfer case?
9. Does the rear diff whine? what about at speeds of 90kmh+?
10. Eliminate all the above and then its time to look in the gearbox. Remove the rear casing off the box (whilst its still in the car) and inspect the viscous coupling. If it looks like its leaking crap then its fukd. If you have another to replace it give it a go and then go for another drive. Chances are thats your issue.
11. If it still does it after number 10, then I reckon its the centre diff inside the gearbox and you'll have to remove the gearbox to repair/replace it.

hope this helps out guys, another member is waiting to know what to do as well..

1. is has only been doing in for the last year but for that 7 months it has been off the road.
2. low speed corners like when you do a U turn or 3 point turn and when the steering wheel is at full lock.
3. the gear box is a gsr box, i have already know it is.
4. the oil is penrite oil never had problems with it before that oil had been using that oil for 3 years
5. all the rims are same size and offset.
6. this is a gsr diff came out of a 93 gsr same model as mine.
7. there is no noise coming from the front or back when driving normally. only when at answer 2.
8. penrite oil used for the last 3 years
9. no the diff doesn't mine at all
10. yeah that's what i am have to do next

It sounds like broken centre diff gears locking up to me too. Behaves EXACTLY the same as mine does on tight turns and I have a welded centre.
The only other thing I would think of is incompatible gears front to rear but you have ruled that out already.

As Tim said, viscous coupling or centre diff is seizing up causing your rear wheels to 'jump' at low speed corners.

I had a similar problem; but then I changed to a thinner grade rear diff oil and the problem was almost completely eliminated - you may want to try this before opening up the gearbox.

Come to my place this arvo, do a u-turn in the cul de sac outside my place and I will watch you. Should be able to tell you straight away whether it's a lsd behaving normally or whether your centre diff is stuffed like Brisvr4 said.

It is, you need to do the following....
1. Drain gearbox fluid.
2. Remove drivers side wheel and inner splash guard until you can see the gearbox end case.
3. Undo the bolts holding the end case on.
4. LIGHTLY tap the end case with a rubber mallet to break it loose from the rest of the box.
5. Remove the end case taking care not to let the wave spring fall out ( you will know it when you see it)
6. Remove the snap ring that retains the VCU.
7. Using 2 pry bars gently pry the VCU off taking care not to loose the small ball bearing that retains the output shaft.
8. Reverse of install. Use a GOOD grade of automotive silicone sealer when you put the end case back on.
Allow everything time to dry before you refill the oil.
Done.

Does anyone know if the Viscous out of a CC GSR is the same as a EVO 2 RS?
I dont know and cannot find out the code from the gearbox the EVO one came out of as it came out of a brand new EVO 2 RS however many years ago it was when they were brand new.
It was replaced with a ralliart version as it was used as a rally car from new.
It has no no's on it or markings i can see.
Cheers

Ummm yep!

i would check if there are any cracks in the rear cradle for the rear diff. mine did the same thing and i had to replace it.
