hi anyone know or done : if u can swap the internals of a evo 1-2 gearbox trans or evo 3 box trans into a VR-4 gearbox trans pref with lsd front diff, or does the hard to find RS box trans have lsd alredy, i know they have different box and diff ratios to E39A box, I have all w5m332 codes, mine is w5m332NQBK
or rebuild kits for E39a galant VR-4 boxs please...

my box is about to go

thanks

Zen

I believe the box you have is a late model galant vr4 (91-92)
So I'm pretty sure its 3.5 ratio.

If you change to an RS or EVO gearbox (internals) you'll end up with a 3.9 ratio box which means you have to change your diff.

If you convert the evo stuff to a 3.5, you can use your old box bits to do this.

Depending on which evo you decide to pull it from, you may require a different transfer case also.

Also depending on what transfer case you have and what spline count it has, you may need to change also, otherwise you can change the output shaft to suit your old one.

There is a bit of mucking around but a few of the local boys are starting to build performance versions of our boxes with some machining and treating work on the gears.

What is wrong with your box? Maybe send your existing box to one of the local guys and get them to upgrade it for ya.

Benefits of going to a later evo spec type box are better forks / syncro's etc etc.

Also, how is your budget looking? Do you have a few thousand to play with?

As for front LSD, just go for a kaaz mechanical. $1500.00 for the lsd alone. If you are lucky enough to find an oem one, you are going to need special drive shafts to suit also.

Good luck buddy!
If you want some names of the guys who are building these boxes, pm me and I'll let them know.

Just make sre that if you go with the Evo3 internals that you use the Evo 3 centre diff as well.
The drive gear is different between that and the vr4 unit.

well fistly thanks gus for your help, well the car is used for street and track mostly track.
my VR-4 has 140000 on it but has had a few power changes in between all that so i feel the box is on the way, well is started jaming in 5th and reverse so i take it the selectors or selector shafts on those two links are broke or bent or somthin, think 1st 2nd on one 3rd 4th on other then 5th reverse.

so i know i cant use a evo box trans unit cause the mout points are different on the boxs between the evos and VR4 so thats why i though of changing in internals over...

gear ratios dont bother me, but the high the number the more talk top speed lower number quick of line but runs out of legs so longer gearing would be better for my use, just hard to find a good box trans unit.
and lsd well it would be nice lol,

atm low on cash saving to build the motor so slowly putting bits away, but for now finding something i can bolt in for now or fixing mine is a option, but i always wanted lsd in front and evo box trans unit, also have in mind later on to take 4ws out and change rear diff to best suit the ratios depending o box trans unit ratios.
so i could fix the unit i got but i fairly shore it dont have lsd in front, or rear for that matter, think the 4bolt
VR-4 RS rear diff is but?
or would like to find another evo later unit with lsd and so on. try buld one good box out of the two, or if the unit i come across is good enough to bolt in for now then later on down the track can look at it again at least ill have units one good one spare cause the are getting rear as hard to find, lol
just not sure what way to go about it.....

thanks guys,

Jamming in 5th/reverse - drain the oil and remove the end casing (can be done with box still in the car) - 5th gear and shift fork will be exposed for inspection.

Also, have you had the reverse switch out for any reason? If it is missing the washer it can cause problems with 5th and Reverse.
As Squid said, take the end case off too and also check the large retaining nuts to make sure they haven't loosened off at all.

FYI you can use an EVO box in a VR4, just not the other way around (unless you work the mounts). You would have to swap the crownwheel and pinion it it though, so you retain the 3.545 ratio.

changed the oils in box and trans, about 3 months ago used castrol VMX-M think that may of caused it a bit, put castrol syn 75 a full synthetic and its stopped doing it so hopefuly it dont jam up again for few more mothns of hard driving lol. Well Had some deep thoughts in my workshop with a few mates and my conclusion is to scrap the whole idea of stuffing around tryin to convert everything and to just buy a Evo 3 half cut, sorce a tail shaft and rear diff and go from there to swap it all over. I think that would be the best option, hay guys. Thats when the motor goes that is lol, or box lol wich ever first,

thanks for the help ill keep you all posted,

If it is for a VR4, the evo rear diff wont fit.

In order to use a rear diff, you must pull the internals out of it and use the cups to suit because they have larger diam shafts.

Tailsshaft is different, so you have to use the vr4 one.

I think it would be easier to rebuild your existing gearbox, especially if nothing is actually broken. This way you don't need to much around with gear ratios, chaning x-fer case, etc

New synchros/rings, bearing kit and a front LSD if you wish (you can use an LSD out of any w5m33 box vr4 OR gsr/evo) and centre diff upgrade and your box should easily be able to handle some abuse.

All that will set you back for a low-low price of $2500+.
