hey boys

just wondering the differences between early model VR4 engines

1987/88
1989/90/91
Aspec and Jspec
auto and manual

can anynone enlighten me?

off the top of my head:

engine differences inc gearbox

1987/88
basic setup inc.
450cc inj
3.505 gearbox ratio
7.8 compression
tdo5 14b turbo
rs version not sure of specs, but from what i've seen, they still have a 14b, 450cc and a 3.5 ratio.. just light weight body..

1989/90/91
basic setup also
rs versions have a small 16g, 510cc inj, 3.9 diff / box ratio

Aspec and Jspec
aspec uses a single runner inlet manifold
(ECI MULTI)

jspec has the cyclone inlet manifold (twin runners)

auto and manual
auto has the tdo4
manual has the tdo5

so then the only difference between an auto and a manual Jspec is bolt on stuff?

ie: no internal differences?

correct and mostly vr4 auto's are unthrashed and are in very god nick if your looking at buying a frt cut seen 2 auto vr4's and after opening them have been very clean and like 5000 km motors.

Ok how do you tell if its a 88 or 89 RS?
It was regoed as 89 but we all know that MEs just make it up as they go along. It is a E - E38A SNPF 4. Can someone tell me what the number son the turbo are if it was a small 16g?

You can tell if they have a vented bonnet or not.

1989 was the year that the facelifts were introduced, some were facelifts, some werent.

Mine doesn't have the vented bonnet :'( (Just remembered my bonnet doesn't match, so theres a chance it came with a facelift originally :))But i thought my intercooler looked bigger then the standard ones.

If i took it off and took a photo of it could u tell me if it was the same or not?

oh and also
monte carlos (i consider them rs's with luxury stuff) came with bigger t/b elbow and intercooler piping / intercooler

as for the early rs, yes they dont have bonnet vents and also no 4bolt...
they still have a/c i believe.. but do have wind up windows.. they also have the old school lights at the rear..

as for the later rs's, i've never seen one in real life..

theres a whole lot of differences, but i believe this is a 4G63 thread, so we're going way off topic :p

perhaps we should start a new thread?

E38a is RS. Whats the numbers after the E38a? If its E38A-002XXXX then its most likely a facelift.

Why dont you email me the pics and i'll upload them for you.
