Anyone done it? I know it's been done a couple of times.

What has to change? apart from the final drive ratio of course.

Driveshaft length/splines?
Gearbox Mount?
Anything else I should know about?

It -has- been done before, i'm just not sure who by.

E1/2/3 box for the record.

I think it was one of the New Zealanders. I'm pretty sure they bolt up just fine but the mounting points to the chassis and shifter are completely different

EVO box will be a W5M33, but with evo mounting points on the box.

to get it to work you will need to swap the front output and crown wheel from a a VR4 W5M33, i am not 100% if the older boxes (KM/FM etc) are interchangable, i think they are though) i have compared the internals of a W5 and a KM and the difference is in the centre diff not the output.

but yea, you need to swap center diff's which means you will keep your CV cups and spline counts etc.

Oh ok. That makes it easy then.

Might swap the evo internals into the w5m box if the mounts aren't the same on the drivers side.

Other than that, seems pretty straight forward. On with the job then :)

Cheers guys!

It was me.

Used the front diff and output shaft from my KM trans in an Evo2 W5M33 box.

Box bolts to the vr4 drivers side mount just fine, but only the top 2 bolt holes on the box line up with the motor, so that's all that's holding the box on (I managed to pop the centre diff doing helli's before this became an issue though  )

and yes you'll have to make a custom gear selector cable mounting bracket - thing.

Evo 5th gear + 3.545 final drive = 2500rpm (ish) at 100km/h, good for crusing, good for top speed, but blunts the acceleration somewhat :(

That's what I needed to know. It's also what I want. Car will spend a lot of its time on the highway.

Who accelerates in 5th anyway? :D

Sounds like it gives me more time to boost!

Once you work out all the bits, write me a how to
Is that ASpec box over there any use for the center diff/output ?

So I guess conversely if you want to put a mechanical LSD out of an evo into a VR4 box you can't do it without getting custom driveshafts?

Thats like a W5M33 box originally with a 3.909 front diff being used in a drivetrain with 3.545 front and rear diffs isnt it?

I though about this swap a while ago for the vr4..it was using an VR4 RS W5M33 box with my original KM255 driveline.

Apparently drag racers etc love it..less gearchanges...good for high HP...put the power down longer.

yep it is.

Doubtful.

I have a w5m box anyway and plan to get an e1/2/3 box with a mechanical front lsd and then sort of driveshafts.

If I have to go custom then oh well :/

Can't you just use Evo inner CV cups with vr4 shafts anyway?

a good drive shaft shop should be able to put evo inners
on vr4 outers,

So, what you're saying is that an evo3 diff will fit into a VR4, you just need to get evo driveshafts too? Other than that it's the same size etc. as the VR4 diff? Will the VR4 final drive bolt to the evo diff? Speedo cable drive? If this is the case I may have to register for some of the NZ mitsi forums :D
