Great summary. I've been watching NZ prices for the past few years as an indicator because I didn't have access to the Japanese auction values.
The US cars I've seen on instagram lately seem a bit rough and the prices (including dealer mark up) seem to be ~US$15k. NZ prices seem to translate to >A$20k. The cars in the UK seem to be really rough and particularly rusty.
I think those left in Australia are probably the pick of the bunch. Most are by now in long term enthusiast ownership and there's generally no rust here like in other markets. But the values here don't reflect the values in NZ, Japan or (potentially US if demand picks up like GTRs).
In relation to numbers left, as a starting point its firstly impossible to know exactly how many were made! There's only internet speculation of around 5000 of E1,2, and 3. But when you look at vin numbers, my E1 is in the 6000s! So no idea what that implies the number made is.
Ultimately, we can agree the of genuine number left is generally low. But I wonder how many people really lust for an E1-3 vs other more numerous JDM classics such as Supras, GTRs, etc.
Key question is: if a TME 6.5 is a $50k car, what does that make a good E3 worth, given that was a key WRC car, and supposedly the version of the early cars that everyone likes?
