ECU Code tones - Help!

Could anyone please help as to what a constant long tone means when checking ECU codes. Have looked but cant find any detail, as far as we know its an ECU related error but if anyone could help on what the error actually is would be much appreciated!

The error code doesn't get more specific than an issue with the ECU itself. I believe that an '88 would have the two board ECU. There is the capacitor issue that effects the single board ECUs, but I'm not sure if it applies to the two board ECU. Probably does seeing they are an older design. Capacitors get leaky and damage the board.

Long pulse = x10
Short pulse = x1

E.g: Long long short, long long short short - correspond to codes 21 and 22 respectively.

Ahh right, I just understood your actual question upon re-reading.
When working correctly with no fault codes, the diagnostic terminal outputs a repetitive single short pulse.
Continuous 12V indicates a faulty ECU.
