Since my car is off the roads, it's given me time to save up for an ECU. Problem is I don't want something expensive which I will not fully take advantage of. My car will only be street driven, with maybe a visit or two to the drag strip. I'd love to take it out on the track, but due to uni and work I doubt I'll have time.

At the moment I got an Apexi SAFC and an Apexi ITC, with an AVCR. I know most of you guys here dread these piggybacks. Should I just get these tuned again and keep them?

How do chipped ecu's perform? A few guys here seem to be pulling quick times and they seem to be relatively cheap. Would it be better then my SAFC and ITC.

What about full ECU? Would they be worth it putting it into a street driven car?

I use ems ... They have the stingray and the 8860 ...

8860 is the top of the line.. You have sooo much control over the settings... It is great.. You can change all the mapping so you have it set for the street, then plug in your laptop and change it to your track or drag setting...

I have this combined with the AVC-R also ... Although this was the set up in the Sonata, I never got to take it on the track ... :( My mechanics, howver, uses the EMS in in their Sylvia drift cars... And they were the ones who reccomended the setup ...

The only bad thing, is when you upgrade the ECU program, you have to send it to them... It costs you nothing for upgrades, but it is a couple of days to get it back ...

Microtech best value for money
Motec for best ECU.
I have used both these ECU's on my 4G93 and the both ran the car fine...
The motec has a lot more features and has finer tunning, however its not that noticable while driveing... for me anyways.

Both ECU's have been pretty easy to tune.. the Microtech is a lot quicker to tune though..

Thank you
Jason

A factory ecu with a socketed eeprom socket can tune probably to what you want.

Advantages of it:

- Can tune real time (while the car is running)
- Can alter fuel/timing/advance maps (similiar to an aftermarket ecu)
- Retains factory ECU location
- Retains factory AFM
- Unmodified (factory) to the naked eye
- 99.9% sure will pass any emissions test (EPA)
- Has powered many cars into the low 11 second region.

wolf 3d is what i would option for. Great value for the money, plenty of maps readily avaliable over the net and i use one in my cordia running a vr4 engine and couldnt pick a fault in it.

plus!

no need for laptop to change maps, you have a hand controller
and maps can be stored on an external db9 card.. which u can change on the fly!

also no need for the avcr or another boost controller as they have one built in. will use the stock mitsu solenoids also to control boost...

better than microtech, may cost a little more but its worth the extra..
free software upgrades also and they are based in VIC so it can be done on the spot..

its also got wideband o2 and full data logging..
heaps of aux ports and there are plenty of maps available..

This in the hands of someone who knows what theyre doing is the best option for a street car.

Otherwise my thumbs up goes to the Autronic SMC. SO many fast Mitsis here in NZ running them.

just wondering what the costs are of installing an aftermarket ecu and tuning it?

Anywhere from ~$2000 fitted and tuned for PNP (plug and play) to around $3500 fitted and tuned for a Motec/Autronic.

Just make sure that if you get an aftermarket ecu fitted that you have it hidden and that you have a 'fake' AFM in place because thats one of the first things a cop looks for and its pretty costly to remove the aftermarket ecu and fit the factory one then refitted the aftermarket one for 'EPA - emissions tests'

hrmm.. harry's wofl3d for sale looks tempting.. so 2k on top of that for everything to get tuned?..

~2k included the ecu..

tuning normally shops charge $500-$1000 depending on how good the tuner is and what style of computer you have.

.

here for wolf v500 aswell,

i will be running one on my evo 2,

plug n play loom should nearly be ready now.

i have a v4 at the moment and am very happy with it

I got a chipped and socketed GSR ECU from MEEK. Good value and he wrote all the new settings onto it for me (ie injectors, cams, airflow meter etc etc. Best thing is it also retains the factory settings, so it's perfect for a street driven car in my opinion.

Just my 2 bob.
