I'm looking to install an Electric Water Pump to the Coupe as an auxiliary to the mechanical pump. I'd like to have it setup so that it continues to circulate water/coolant through the engine whilst the car is parked in the pits after a session on the track and the motor is switched off.

I have a SPAL thermo fan which is wired to run whilst the motor is off and the key is switched to 'Accessories' and the intention is to have the EWP and the thermo fan run together until the pre-set temperature is reached and the ECU switches them off.

Any suggestions/thoughts on what I should be looking at?

I have been thinking on this for a while, so I hope you keep us updated on what you do.

Easiest solution would be to run it off the same relay as your fan. If the fan runs, the pump runs.

Next is to run another temp controller and separate wiring to run the pump independently from the fan.

One option I considered was to run a turbo timer but use it to run the fans and pump.
Also, jaycar do a smart turbo timer kit. It varies the timer length by the time at high revs and high load. This may suit as well to run your pump and fans.

I would probably just run it with the fan
 
Buy a Davies Craig ewp controller.
It connects to the fan and pump.
Set your temp and it will try and chase it.
Turn off your engine and it will cool it until it hits the desired temp.

Simple.

just run a full ewp if you are going to the effort. Remove your mechanical one and you won't look back especially on a track car always up in the revs.
 
An EWP is just adding another point of failure IMO.


the old plastic davies craig were total shit (more often than not, some people had a good run) the new alloy bodied ones seems to be a touch better though.
or if you use one of the bosch pumps with the davies craig controller you may have more luck.

With proper shrouding and the fan working correctly you dont really need this, when on the track you dont even need the fan, its really just for when you slow down anyway.

If you do decide its the way to go, then as Baz says remove the mechanical pump all together otherwise if the engine is of its a massive restriction anyway.
 
Thanks for the feedback sofar guys. I don't know if I want to go removing the mechanical pump and then making up bits and and pieces to replace it with a full EWP setup. I've only just gotten the car back to a point where I can drive it consistently - so it's not going back to pieces anytime soon if I can help it!!

The plan was/is to run it off the thermo fan relay so that it works in combination with the thermo fan to prevent heat soak. Radiator shrouding is definitely on the cards to be done, but for times when the car is in the pits I want something that can run independently of the motor.
 
If it is simply for heat soak purposes, I would simply rig up the fan to continue with the engine off. Are you having heat soak issues currently or is it just peace of mind?

Ewp not only allows cooling after shut down but also allows much faster engine warm up speeds.

I've had 3 Davies Craig pumps fail on me. The one i have now seems to be ok (ceramic seal).

The alloy ones are the new ones but they flow quite a lot. You will get temp fluctuations with a high flowing pump. Example: 90deg - 85deg - 90 deg - 85deg.

With a smaller pump you will get smaller variation. Example: 90deg - 88deg - 90deg - 88deg.

another option for heat soak is to run a small pump in parallel that is wired on constantly to a temp sensor / relay setup. So it will only work if the engine is off and the temp is above a certain temp. You could write up your fan with it also. You may need a one way valve in your main lower radiator hose so the water flows through your engine. Example:

Lower radiator outlet -> hose -> y piece -> one way valve -> engine.
Lower radiator outlet -> hose -> y piece -> pump -> engine.

You ideally want your engine to only cool to around 60deg c imo. Any lower and your ecu will probably be running trims for engine temp (ie cold start features). Keep the motor at operating temp or just below for quick warm start.
