So about 6 months ago i noticed my engine would make bad grinding type noises when it got warm and after only having done 13k kms on the engine and life happening I decided to let the car sit for a while.
Fast forward to yesterday, i pulled the timing covers off to find alot of brownish dust under the covers and part of a tooth had broken off my crank sprocket and there were some small chunks out of the cover of the other sprocket.
Is this what i dread most or something a little more simple?

Thanks in advance.

I'd say your balancer bolts were overtightened, and the tooth has come off and done some damage. Pull the belt, inspect it for damage and probably replace, check the rest of the gears for damage and replace any that need it. Replace that crank gear and torque those small bolts to spec.

Looks like a few chunks have been taken out of the oil pump sprocket too.
Why did you not check it out a few months ago when the noises began?

I didnt have time to check it so i just parked it up in the garage and left it. It was built by a workshop so i would of hoped everything was torqued to spec... ill pull the belt off and checl the other gears.
