Hey peeps,

Just looking into getting my engine rebuilt and forged, just wondering who is out there and what everyone thinks is value for money.

All opinions welcome and heard.

Cheers, its for a vr4.

basically what has already been said,
forged pistons (20thou over)
shot peened rods, unless you really wanna go forged
balanced bottom end
lightened flywheel
removed balance shafts
cometic head gasket
good gasket set
cams & cam gears
valves & stem seals
valve springs
retainers
waterpump
belts
seals
hydraulic tensioner
clean and inspect oil pump
egr block off if its aspec

thats pretty much it, i did mine at home and ended up costing about 4-5k

yer from a workshop though? I'm not confident enoughf to undergo something like that  again just curious

Im just working out what is better, amature to rebuild my car..for cheaper... or spend some dosh on a pro to do it.

To do it myself will work out to about 4k is what your saying, now for a mechanic to do it..who is around apart from daz..cause he quoted me 7k..

Cheers

Well that just underlines how i feel about mechanics.......

I think our normal rate to assemble and engine is about $800-$1000 depending on size and any intricacies. That obviously doesnt inlcude if any machining/lightening/balancing etc.

I've just done almost all of my business with "Revolution Motorsports" in the US. He gave me very good prices, bit slow to communicate and ship. I'm all for keeping the business in Australia, but when I'm on a budget and Meek were going to charge me almost $2000 more....there was no real question.

Forged pistons work when at optimum temp and at full throttle because of heat.
Hence having blow by, good engine rebuilders can get a forged set up with out blow by but a amature your probrolly likely to get blow by with a forged set up

Intended usage plays a part here too, forged pistons expand quicker than cast ones as they heat up. Competition cars get warmed up slowly, before their driven, street cars don't, so the piston to bore clearance is often set bigger to allow for the different expansion rate and prevent cold seizures - which is why they rattle and sound like arse when cold.
