Hi,

Please note I have searched the forum big time before I ask this question but couldnt really find an answer to this one...

Q- Can you remove the motor out the top of the engine bay witout taking the gearbox out?

I'm just unsure if with all the pulleys and brackets off the front of the motor if you will still get enough clearance to get the clutch/flywheel out from the bellhousing and then motor out.

By the way... awesome forum, I already have learnt heaps... I'm a newbie whos about to undertake a motor rebuild due to no compression on #3 cyl.

Cheers,
Simmo

Its possible but alot of manouvering and stuffin around, ALOT easier just to remove the engine and box out as 1

also take the gear box mount completely off to give you more space...

Take them both out at once. It's only an extra 6 bolts and a couple of plugs and cables. Alot easier that way

Why are you wanting to only do the engine?

Im another newbie doing the same rebuild simmo, I just pulled out the whole lot (including the transfer case of which I bent the back of the case while jacking it out lol) I have had a heap of fun in the last 4 weeks rebuilding the engine and learning about the mighty 4g63t also. My motor is all back together now, just waiting on the new clutch and timing kit and she is all going back in next week. Good luck with the build

Great thanks for the replies guys!
I just bought the car for a bargain as it had a misfire... I thought it would have been a burnt/damaged valve due to shitty corroded injector plugs and coils (happened to a mates that he bought just recently). So I just had head off, gave that a full reco and put it back on with new timing belt kit and tensioner... then... still got misfire!! Turns out got only 40psi in piston #3 and on wet test straight up to 150psi... so its time for a bottom end.

I'm well mechanically minded and can build a motor but its the little things like bearing tape/blue etc that I'm not sure about and balance shaft bearings (if to keep the balance shafts at all?) so I am really thinking to strip back down and take the short block to one of the good companies in Perth and get bore, new rods and pistons...

$$ arent the best at the moment but have to get it rolling again...

I'll let you know the outcome :)

Cheers
