Is it possible to remove an evo engine without removing the gearbox and/or transfer case?
If so, how many bolts are there on the bellhousing?

Its easier if you take transfer off. Can leave gearbox on but. You will need to have the lifting chain so the gearbox end is lower when you lift it with the crane...that way it comes up and out past the chassis rail.

No, it's not.

There's not enough gap between the engine and chassis rail to allow the clutch to slide off the gearbox input shaft.

Both out, or gearbox first.

Heres is my engine AND gearbox when I recently removed it...All as one mind you. Note the angle of the engine to assist getting it out past the chassis rail.

Was that directed to me?

I had thought he'd asked if it was possible to remove the engine only. (When he said 'without removing the engine and/or transfer box) The answer to that is 'no'.

There's barely enough room to change the timing belt. If you've managed to get the engine out and in without removing the gearbox, I take my hat off to you. I certainly can't!

You can if you remove chassis rail
I guess we're lost in translation here, as there is no way you can remove the part I'm talking about. Big box section, runs front to rear of the car, part of the chassis.

Unless you're meaning to make the front of the car a tubular frame? A lot of work just for removing an engine... ;)

He was asking if you could remove the engine from the car, without taking the box and transfer off. Thats how I interpreted it.
I guess he wasn't too clear then. Especially when he then asks "If so, how many bolts in the bell housing?" That would be irrelevant if he's taking it all out in one go.

Nevermind. We've both said pretty much the same thing anyway.

I think this deserves proper debate.........so....... Jamo, you need to fly over and remove my gearbox from the racecar, without removing the motor. while your at it, may as well chuck in the new clutch.

I see this as the only way to settle this argument. :)

Maybe you should re read what I posted as I never said anything of a kind.
However...in the past I have removed the box from the engine while the engine stayed in the car.
It was done at a mates shop who specialize in gearboxes. He has a frame that goes over the strut towers and attatches to the lifting hook so you can lower the engine down on one side and remove the box.
I can post pics if need be..
You pay to fly me and the frame over and I will show you how its done George!

Im classing that as a ROOKIES comment George, worthy of a spoon flogging!

Lol! Slow down fellas, my comment was merely a joke about the fact I still haven't changed my clutch over yet, and figured I'd offer my car up as a guinea pig to show whatever there was to show. As usual, I was not intending to offer any useful input to the actual topic.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

This is the whole reason why this particular box had to come out...shit fucking Exeddy clutch...spring broke free and jammed between the fingers of the pressure plate.
