Hia peoples,

I'm interested in getting a small sub-community of ECU modders together. The idea is to build the local (i.e. non-commercial) knowledge base to help other 4G drivers. I have nothing against people who commercially sell these sort of things, its just the information is available for free on-line http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/dsm-ecu/ so why pay for it?

I have bought enough bits for 7 EEPROM kits. These include an EEPROM burner, a blank 29C256 chip, links to free modding software as well as a couple of .bins to start from. The software is the free "Evilscribe" and the brilliant "TunerPro" package.

Sounds great no? Now for the bad news:
1. Its not a dedicated burner - its a cheap PCI NIC so you will not only need a computer but you will also need to put the card in and out of your puter everytime you burn.
2. The burning software is linux so you need to know enough to at least navigate a file system. It will be a bootable CD so you don't need a dedicated machine - just reboot your home PC with the linux cd in your cdrom and your set.
3. You also need to get your car socketed. This cost me about $20 bucks or so.
4. I'm very much still learning 68HC11 assembly so I can't give you much help yet.

So, I am looking for people who are eager and prefereably have some software/programming background.
These kits would be provided free (as in beer - yes a six pack would be appreciated  )

Please post if you are interested. First 7 posts win.

Cheers,
John

I wanted to do this, with the ostritch and all those bits so i could get my car tuned

but theres so little knowledge on it in australia

in the end i just decided its too much messing around

I was going to try and get into something like this also but lost interest in it. Though i was going to work on the 4g93t ecu rather then the one for the 4g63t's. Unfortunatly i don't have the programming knowledge and the fact is that i'm not going to really need to chip my ecu now as i'm keeping the car as is. But this has sort of sparked my interest in having a shot again, get out the old soldering iron and have a go at socketing. Anyone got a 4g93t ecu they want to donate?

I also have one of these that i purchased when i was on holidays in hong kong earlier this year. Oh it has windows software also.

baz: The software is evil scribe http://freshmeat.net/projects/evilscribe/
and tunerpro

tharaka: Just to let you know how easy it is. I have already got a chip that has the following features:

1. Extended fuel maps = ECU able to "read" realiably beyond stock boost.
2. "Smoothed" air/fuel/timing maps = smoother and slightly quicker accel + less part throttle knock. (NOTE: this isn't just seat of the pants - i have actually verified this)
3. Inj Pulse width cap removed = able to drive injectors a bit harder
4. Octane reset = Knock counter reset to 0 every time you drop below a certain (definable) air flow. (Just lift accellerator to reset knock to 0)
5. Rev limit based stutter box launch = Put the accell to the floor and the revs are limited to 4000RPM (selectable)
6. No-lift-to-shift = Hold the accel down through your drag. The rev limit is set to 4500RPM while the clutch is in (also selectable)

I have also got the patches for:

1. Converting the (useless) factory boost gauge to a knock gauge
(increments selectable)
2. Choose injector size
3. Choose type of MAF (1G/2G/Vr4 etc)
and many others......

Trust me - its very easy to start. The hard bit comes later when you try and work out the best mix of boost/timing/fuel at different RPM/loads/temperatures/petrol for your car. This is the bit I want others to help me learn.

So far the people are:
1. Skuz
2. Thakara
3. Baz

I was going to do something similar but ended up going a DSMLink, which is a chip w/memory board and a program that allows full control of the ECU including nitrous control and antilag.

And it's much simpler to use

John
I've already got most of that stuff on my chip

all i need now is to fine tune it

i was also going to get the DSMlink, but because I hvae a jap ecu, im pretty sure the chips are different (they store information in different locations)
so i dont want to spend 500usd on something that wont work in my car

but yeah, im definitley interested in learning more about it

I don't have a lot of programming background (I did some C++ at TAFE) but I'm definitely interested. I've wanted to get into this and find out how it all works etc. I've also been tempted to eventually buy an ostrich as well, instead of having to burn countless chips to tune...

They use 2G dsmlinks in EVO 8's so I would say its possible. I'll ask on the dsmlink forum for you

cool, thanks :)

Would be really interested in learning more bout this, a work mate already uses tunerpro for his commonwhore, with great results, and he says that the chips are exactly the same as he uses for his. he also has an awsome burner so i wouldnt ned that just some help in getting some base maps, Also my car is a Aus spec VR4 but i would like to get another computer to tinker with, so if anyone have a spare comp. they would be willing to sell just let me know.

Just heard back from Jesse (who is the vendor for DSMLink on the Galantvr4.org forums). He spoke with the inventor who said this:

"Yes it will work. But you may see some small issues since they don't have egr and such."

I asked what no EGR would do and he said:

"It's not something that will effect the performance or tuning of the car... it may throw a CEL is all. "

I have no EGR in my car and it doesn't throw the CEL!

Sweet, put me down for 1, any chance of a WINDOWS burner but

I presently have 3 EPROMs for my car ;) Surly i can dump these off with the software :)

I am interested, I have programming background but not assembler!

I will need to chip the ecu soon, so it is a great time to learn!!!

Glen

Ok, times up.

If everyone interested could message me with contact numbers or addresses I can start getting these out to people.

I would prefer pickup but don't mind posting (cause im slack)

Cheers,
john

hey these kits are very cheap and in so being so cheap there is not alot of support for this kind of chipping ECU in aust. i have just came from the HONDA world and there is the same kind of chip ECU called "CROME" and "UBERDATA". in the states there is more support for this kind of chip, for some people it runs very well and some it doesnt. i know of someone in adelade with a B16 turbo making 160kws at 6psi running this kind of chip and has had no probs but then again he works in the elec indrustry if you want i can try ask him if he knows about the mitsu chip as it sounds very much the same in the way it works hes more into the honda stuff but may be of help.

WRCVR4 - you can only get the images off if its a 29CXXX (where XXX is on e of 128,256,512). Thats the only chip it supports.
