Yeah I hate this shit. Cops should dedicate their time to better things such as reducing the amount of street violence in this city. Who gives a shit about exhaust noise when there are loud parties and barking dogs all night. Such a joke.

I wasn't even on the road they claim to have seen me on! Sent them a letter telling them that, they don't care. What shits me the most is that this law requires YOU to prove your innocence, I thought the basis of our common law system was that they had to prove you guilty. Such a load.

mate I have to do the same, go through an EPA emissions/sound check.

I know I'll pass as I have a stock exh with a quality jap muffler, but I have to remove and replace afew components. Such a fkn waste of time :fuuuuu::fuuuuu:

Yeah I'm really torn about what to do ... go with this crappy Redback muffler reducing it to 2.5" ... if it doesn't pass I don't pay pretty much the exhaust bloke said. Or stick one of those Xforce MP0x which might not pass ....

Would sticking another resonator in help silence the lift off sonic boom? I doubt it'd take 9 db off though.

Who else here has a 3" exhaust that has been tested and passed EPA with no shifties like steel wool etc ... and what are the specs of it?

Here look for my post i wrote some figures down that lukey stated in the lukey/walker catalogue.
They quote how much sound it takes off, but that compared to no muffler so compared to your exhayst now it depends how well your muffler is or isnt working to how much differnce it will make.

I just had a look on their web site but they dont have much teck info. In the massive walker/ lukey cataloge at work they had all the info.

If you have to get a test, the #1 way to pass it is to get a flange cut out of 1.2mm steel, holesaw a ONE INCH hole in the dead centre, and then put the flange into your exhaust just before your cat and bolt it all up.

Looks factory, can't tell it has a massive restriction.

Car will run like dogs balls (don't boost it), but it'll be as quiet as a mouse.

Afterwards, fit Varex. Forget about EPA tests. (keep old exhaust + flange for any further tests)

just stay away from dalder exhaust in boxhill. they will charge you regardless of whether the car passes or fails, and the guy is extremely anal about obstructions in the exhaust.
is anyone running a varex with 272'+ cams?

I've been to Daalder in Preston. He seems reasonable. One test fee total if I give him the work. He's quoted me a fair price for a flanged Redback muffler, so I can stick my old one back on if I want to. I might just go with that unless anyone can tell me the Xforce MP01/MP02 is under the limit in 2.5" or 3" :)

Im using a Varex with 280 cams. When the varex is fully open it sounds like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucKizojWcRs . I had a proper stationery exhaust noise level test done with the Varex butterfly fully closed and it registered 88.25db average at 4300rpm (4 results averaged out, there were 2x 88db and 2x88.5db results). Didnt bother checking with it open

Ocyrion, you may just have to bite the bullet and go to an exhaust shop and say "make it under 90db". Sadly its going to sound very quiet and you will lose power as a result

Shit if you had ~ 88db with the varex closed 90db must be pretty quiet!!!

Try putting in two hot dogs or another strait through muffler half way down if it can fit.

Or just put is silencer in half way down just to pass the test

What's a silencer exactly? I thought that was just another term for a muffler ...

Yeah I have to pay to get my car constipated. The good news is, since the guy I got the car off had an oval muffler (which I use regularly) and a second resonator style muffler (all flanged), I'll have 3 mufflers to choose from, legal, reasonable and obnoxious. The EPA can get fucked given that bikes, trucks and dickheads playing loud music late at night are far noisier and annoying than a car which irritates someone for no longer than 3 seconds as it goes past.

I might put another resonator in ... what's most likely to dull the lift off boom? The muffler on the back is big as it is.

This whole thing is unjust anyway, where's the burden of proof on the accuser to prove that I was over the limit? I was NEVER on the road that the cops claim to have seen me on, so as far as I'm concerned the notice is bullshit. Maybe I should take it to court.

Anybody that doesn't live in VIC, the fascist state ... stay where you are!

All right, an update. $220 later, I have a crippled exhaust which has killed the torque between 2000-3000rpm. The boost comes on in a rush now (bit later) but the car feels a lot more like a leaded Cordia, so it's not smooth like it was before. I guess I'll have to use the accelerator more since it needs more revs now to be tractable, which will use more fuel. EPA <_<

It's a bit ridiculous that bikes, buses and trucks can have more noise. They should have to be all the same if they really care about noise.

It's also a hot load of bullshit that you can receive heaps of these test notices and have to get the car retested. Unjust and unfair. Probably one of the most unfair laws in the country. :fuuuuu:

Hot tip kids stay the fuck away from nsw, they are as bad if not worse.
And it suck big time! Defects for non standard exhausts and referrals to the epa for exhaust noise level tests is probably at an all time high lately.

getting this back up. Ill be testing some of the Varex range here in townsville from my local shop and will let you know the results

I agree there are so many bikes that are heaps louder then most cars and not sure if its just me but i dont see many v8's get done for exhuasts its just mostly the 4 turbos. I know that hks make a hi power slient exhaust but for the later model evos, maybe with abit of custom work they could be made to fit earlier shape lancers?

Just come live in Tassie :)
Only been pulled over once, and that was because the copper wanted to know if I had a kitted gsr or a genuine evo 3 lol...

Plus we have awesome windy roads that the cops never put cameras on.

Back on topic (kinda)... can anyone comment on whether the twin-tip varex is more restrictive than the standard oval varex? (Not interested in a cannon, as I can't stand the look of them)
