just thought i'd let everyone know that theres a booze bus / epa station holding up peak hour traffic on mountain hwy (b/w scoresby & dorset roads), as of 6pm.
result: defected + epa noise AND emissions!
if anyone here can reccommend local rwc mechanics, please pm me.
 
We're getting heaps of cars sent to EPA stations here in NSW too boys. Basically nowadays if you're pulled over by the cops you're instantly referred to one! Same thing going over there?

yeah i was unfortunate.. i was actually planning to head in the opposite direction.
shat my pants when the epa chick did the noise test because antilag kicks in at 4000rpm :blink:
just drove past at 8pm and they've packed up.. i don't see how they're even allowed to block peak hour traffic like that.
 
So did they trigger the antilag doing the test, isnt the test at 4000?

All you could do in that situation is laugh, "oh its got a bad miss!"
 
test is at 4500-5000rpm. i told her it was a safety mechanism to prevent over-revving in neutral so she feathered it at 4000rpm which prevented boost build-up :rolleyes: still got a 101db reading though.

if anyone has the following items lying around to buy/borrow it'll be extremely helpful:
one 205/40/R17 or a pair of 215/45/R17 tyres
middle timing belt cover

btw they were targeting ANYTHING that wasn't standard.. even your average car with aftermarket wheels. i had 10 police/epa officers looking over the car. almost got written up for "loose items inside cabin" for having a fire extinguisher in the centre-console but they already had enough for a major defect.. absolute bs.

Your reading is quite high, do you think it was the exhaust popping on the limiter that exaggerated it, or is it just quite loud?

did they take photos of the car?

the jump was on backoff.. otherwise it was around the 97-98db mark. 3" tbe with a few leaks and an old cannon + cams will generally just be plain loud. to be honest, there is no way of keeping it under 90db without seriously limiting performance.
 
How do you deal with driving a car that's 101 dB all day long?

Mine's like 83 dB with 272 cams and a full turboback 2.5 inch exhaust.

Also, correct testing RPM is 4500 on the dot. Anything else is a failed test. Can't help you with the whole defect thing though.
 
hey luu i got some 215/40/17 tyres here if you need.
otherwise ive got a set of wheels with 215/45/17 with good tread.
let me know if either of those could help
 
You could try putting another strait through oval muffler in thecent re if you can fit it.
At least its strait through but the larger area will take more sound than say small resonators.
And another strait through oval one out the back. May get you under without restriction.

Girlfriends brother 108sx has just a cat and an strait through oval muffler in the center and similar in the rear and its real quiet! Not like my car.

Or just fit a really quite and restrictive muffler with a flange so you can just unbolt it after. Most places will fit one for around 150. Gonna have to get a real lean tune for emissions!
 
Be careful doing the unbolt/rebolt exhaust thing. These days they take photos of your exhaust when it gets tested and it'll be compared next time you get pulled up and so forth. TMU's can access all sorts of crazy shit on their car computers now.

You can have your car blacklisted in Victoria which makes it impossible to re-register that VIN. Makes life interesting. It's happened to a couple of nutter v8 powered things here in Ballarat.
