Hey All,

My mate got a letter from the EPA last night advising that he has to take his car in to have his exhaust checked. Is there anyway we can check to see if the exhaust will pass EPA test before we head down

Any ideas on what to do if it is too loud ?

reducer

or just throw a reducer/ restrictor in it round the corner from where they test it.. thats all i do..
ive been pulled over by the same cop 3 times and each time he tells me to get it tested i do but only once i put this reducer in.. i just keep it in the boot..

chicken wire

although make sure it's really secure... the inspectors don't appreciate having hot metal spat out at them

if u fail the test the first time, no big deal, just means u pay the $30 or whatever, take ur car away and "fix it" and then bring it back for a re-test and pay another $30.

if you have a flange in your exhaust, get someone to make a baffle plate for you the same shape as the flange.

use a piece of steel about 1mm thick and drill a few holes in it, plus the holes for the flange bolts. this will restrict the exhaust and quieten it down a lot! it just looks like a gasket aswell, so it isn't too obvious. it will choke up the engine a lot, and you will lose power, so wouldn't advise driving around with it for ages.

or maybe just get another muffler...??

yeah, or that

the baffle plate is cheaper though and easy to install/remove, so long as you already have a flange in the exhaust

Or.. Go and buy a DB meter from an electornics store, and check it before you go!

Don't put chicken wire in your muffler.

Baffle Plates are ok, but some exhausts places will spot them, and declare the exhaust un roadworthy and refuse to test you.

Your best bet is to spend a bit of money on a muffler that will quieten it down, so if you get done again you can just throw it back on.

Buy the DB meter, and test it as is, you might already be under the legal limit! which is 90db @ 3500rpm?

I thought that the test was half of your red-line, or 4200RPM? :?

I got 87DB at that level

Up here it's half of whatever the max rpm's are on your tacho.
4500 for me and 92db's.

gees! you'd hate to have one of those 12,000rpm monster tacho's hey!!!

just go and get a SHIT 1.5" system made from SHIT mild steel press bent pipe so that you can swap and change when you need to.

comes in handy trust me!

Where do you get the reducer / restrictors from ??
Sounds like a good option

the reducer is like a plug thats in the end of the muffler, mine is held in by a allen key screw. takes about 5 seconds to put in. but it chokes the hell out of my motor.

they normally comes with the muffler, maybe go see a exhaust place see if they have any lying around.

i havent had mine tested but if 3zercrowds is 82 mine is bound to be close to 96 or 98.. its loud enough to set of car alarms in the street as i drive past..

i had my car epa'd a few months ago and dalder (epa tester) in boxhill wouldn't hand over an noise compliance certificate without putting the car onto a hoist. they even wanted to pull the whole exhaust apart to check for any suspicious parts, but eventually gave up after i told them i wouldn't be paying for labour if nothing was found. my 3" turbo back exhaust was putting out 82db thru the standard muffler  ..just spend $100 and get some flanges made up.
also, reducers/silencers must be welded on to be legal.

how do you get your zorst that loud

mine is 3inch mandrell from turbz with 1 cat and a hi flowed muffler

is it more powerfull to have it straight though or does it need some back presure

if sounds was not issue what would be the best setup

a balloon section staight after the turbo and then staight out the side of the car, in front of the front pass side wheel
