Ethanol in petrol

On the TV news last night the PM was saying they are going to force the oil companys to add ethanol to the petrol and they are going to prevent the oil companies from telling us if there is ethanol in the petrol.

Any one know what affect ethanol will have on our GVR4s ?
What does ethanol do to the octane rating of petrol ?

i think it ups the octane a little bit, im more conserned about ethanols lack of lubricating properties.. but 10% might not be too bad..

if the gov droped their excise by 10% tho that would make a reasonable imact at the bowser

A lot of countries already run ethanol fuel that is 98% ethanol and 2 % petrol. This has been coming for a long, long time. Ethanol is safe for your car the only reason it got that bad hype was that the older cars ? like you vk?s and older the rubber seal around the fuel pump gets eaten away and the ethanol escapes into you cabin. With the newer cars this isn?t a problem. The octan reading is about the same as 95 ron petrol. But I have seen race cars from over in Germany running this type of ethanol fuel.

I've read a massive thread on ethonal on overclockers. I'll try to some up the points...

*Ethonal is polluting the great barrier reef up in qld.

*Ethonal is renewable and wont run out, we just need big farms for it

*More than 5% can damage fueling systems. We would need ethonal resistance pumps and nickel plated injectors.

*Its around 108 ROM octane

*It has a lower energy density than petrol, meaning you wont get as many kms or as good performance

*Methanol can burn alot cleaner than ethonal and petrol

*Ethonal by-products are water and cardbon dioxide

*Ethonal is higly flamable

*Ethonal is clean burning

*Ethonal does not work for boat motors

*Brazil use ethonal in their cars. Somewhere else uses 98% ethonal, 2% petrol.

*Why look at ethonal when you can go to gas?
